William C. Jewett.

In opening a hat store in Shelbvyille, Mr. Jewett has supplied a long felt want.  He was born in 1853, in San Francisco, California.  He traveled considerably in his younger days, having made the trip from California to the Eastern States three times before he was eight years old.  He went to college for several years, preparing himself to become a Civil Engineer, and when eighteen years old, left school and immediately after secured a position os Civil Eningeer with the Cincinnati Southern Railroad.  He remained in this position for four years, when, on account of the confining nature of the office work connected with his business, he was compelled to give it up.  He then entered the employ of Gibson Brothers, of Cincinnati, wholesale dealers in hats and caps, for the purpose of learning the peculiarities of that line of goods with the intention of going into the business for himself.  He remained with this house between one and two years, and on the first of January, 1879, commenced looking for a suitable location.  He finally settled on Shelbyville, and in the latter part of the same month, opened out a well selected and complete stock of hats, caps and gents furnishing goods in the Hamilton Building, next door to Robins' book store, northwest side of the Public Square.  He has a large assortment of hats of all kinds, and can rig you out in almost any style at from sixty cents up.  He is sole agent in this city for the celebrated Quaker City shirt, besides keeping in stock a large line of gents furnishing goods of the latest, newest and nobbiest styles.  Spring style silk hats just received --- something neat and tasty.  Mr. Jewett buys direct from first hands, sells on small margins, and respectfully invites the citizens of Shelby county to call and examine his stock and prices before making their purchases elsewhere.
