            This Indenture made this fifth day of January in the year of Our Lord One thousand Eight Hundred and fifty two Between Elbridge G. Mayhew & Allen Sexton Overseers of the Poor of Addison township in the County of Shelby and State of Indiana of the one part and John Laughlin of the County aforesaid of the other part witnesseth that the said Overseers have put placed & bound do by these presents put place & bind Mary Ellen Landen a poor Girl aged ten years as an Apprentice to the said John Laughlin to be taught the art & occupation of House wife in its various branches & to live with & serve him the said John Laughlin as an apprentice for the term of Eight years from this date that is to say until she the said Mary Ellen Landen shall arrive at the age of Eighteen years if the said John Laughlin shall so long live & the said Overseers do by these presents give unto the said John Laughlin all the right Power & Authority over the said Mary Ellen Landen & her service during the said term which by the laws of this state a Master has in and over a lawfully Indented Apprentice & the said John Laughlin in consideration thereof Doth on his part covenants promise & agree to with the said Overseers & their Successors in office & each & every of them & with the said Mary E. Landen that he will teach & Instruct the said Mary Ellen Landen as his Apprentice or cause her to be taught or instructed in the art & occupation of the different branches of House Wifery with sewing & Knitting after the best way & manner that he can & also to teach & instruct the said Mary Ellen Landen or cause her to be taught or Instructed to read & write well & instructed in Arithmetic as far as the Different Roots & Instructed reasonably well Geography & Philosophy (Provided that the said Mary E. Landen should learn as fast as the common ability of Girls & train her to habits of Industry & Morality & during the term of her Apprenticeship to provide & allow her sufficient meat drink Washing Lodging & Apparel & all other things necessary for an apprentice during her said Term of Apprenticeship & the said John Laughlin further covenants & agrees to furnish & give the said Apprentice at the Expiration of her aforesaid term of Service thirty dollars worth of Suitable wearing Apparrel Including the Amount she may have at the time & also a Bed & Bedding worth at least Twenty Dollars.

            On this 5th day of January 1852 comes Elbridge G. Mayhew Allen Sexton and John Laughlin the parties to the above Indenture and severally acknowledged it to be their act and deed for the purposes therein set forth.
