Benjamin J. Tingley was born in Brunswick, Essex Co., NJ, October 18, 1774; he emigrated to Bloomfield, VA; moved from there to Henderson County, KY; thence to Vincennes, IN; and then to Clermont Co., OH.  In 1813, while a resident of the last mentioned State, he was among the foremost of those who went out in defense of his native land; he held the rank of Ensign and did good and efficient service. In 1837, he moved to Rush County, IN, where he resided until his death, April 13, 1852.  He was a man of great physical strength, and endowed with strong natural powers of mind.  He cultivated a thorough taste for historical and general reading; his memory was extraordinary, and his conversational powers seldom surpassed. He was married in Ohio to Susan Brown, daughter of George & Margaret (Conrad) Brown, natives of Wales. His father and uncle, Levi and Jacob Tingley were soldiers in the Revolutionary war, his uncle Jacob yielding up his life for the cause of freedom.

If you are an amateur historian interested in Woodland, chances are in your quest for the past someone, sometime, is going to suggest you talk to Ralph Sigel, a lifelong Woodland resident and unofficial promoter of his home town.
Born in 1903 and raised in Woodland, Sigel said, "I have always liked Woodland, always been able to find a job here, either in the woods or on the river."
Sigel went to school in Woodland through the ninth grade. He reported the grade school and high school were in the same building.
His father, who had brought his family from Ohio, had a contract to bring the students from the surrounding area to school and as a young boy, Ralph, learned to drive the team.
Being able to handle a horse team proved later to be a handy qualification to have when applying for work.
Eventually the horse drawn team was replaced by the first school bus "truck". Sigel made the transition from teamster to a bus driver and daily went up the Lewis River to pick up and deliver the students.
The school district grew larger and the district bought its own busses.  Sigel went to work in the woods as a "whistle plunker", later rafted logs near Kalama and tried his hand at farming.
Sigel's ability to handle a horse team landed him several jobs. He drove teams during the construction of the early Pacific Highway near Woodland and seined nets off of Caples Landing.
Sigel said the net was stretched out and across the river with three horse teams on each side. Team by team, the horses were driven to pull the large weighted net to the shore, full of a variety of fish.
Ralph married Josephine, a Woodland school teacher in 1926.  They will celebrate their 59th wedding anniversary on May 23, 1986.  Josephine describes her husband as a collector of pictures, newspapers, everything.  "He even collected me," she said.
Sigel helped charter the Woodland Volunteer Fire Department and was an active member for 10 years. "We had a hose cart and a chemical cart that we pulled by hand," he said. "Our first vehicle was an old car that we transformed in a fire truck.
Sigel eventually returned to work as a bus driver for the Woodland School District. He and Josephine retired together in 1969.
"I was going to redo a shed out back." Sigel said, "and put out some -- --"
They have had a busy retirement and are active in the Cowlitz Historical Society, the Presbyterian Church and the Woodland Lions.
Sigel describes in detail the early pictures he has preserved of the local area. His recollections of names, places and incidents are educational and accurate.
Local Little League enthusiasts and parents will undoubtedly recognize the name "Sigel Field," home of the Woodland Little League.
The land for the spring and summer youth activity was donated by Ralph Sigel several years ago ------ When the sport became popular for girls, Sigel donated additional ground for them to use.
The biggest change Sigel has seen in the Woodland area over the years is the development of the area east of the Interstate 5 freeway. "Woodland was always on the west," he said.
He speaks of Woodland with a great amount of pride and satisfaction derived from knowing the people and the way they live. "We still have room for more industry and more people," he said. (Picture)

Woodland resident Ralph Sigel, 86, is the last surviving member of Woodland's first volunteer fire department, founded in 1925. "It was something in those days," he said recalling his experiences fighting fires.
Sigel said he was one of a group of Woodland men who knew the town needed a fire department. The volunteers rallied support and "pretty soon we had an organization," Sigel said.
The department began fighting fires with carts and horses. "Eventually we had a fire truck," he said. The department's first "real" fire engine was the Peter-Pursch.
"The first thing they taught us was don't go crazy, but put the fire out," Sigel said.
In addition to fighting fires, Sigel worked as a logger and owned a farm before he settled into a career as a school bus driver and custodian for the Woodland School District. His longest trip as school bus driver was to LIma, Ohio in 1966. Sigel and his wife, Jo (deceased), both retired from their jobs in 1969. Jo had been employed as a first grade teacher for 20 years.
Sigel was not forgotten in the community after he retired, however. In 1969, he donated 2.5 acres of land on Green Mountain Road for a LIttle League playing field. Parents then developed the field, including a diamond, grandstands and a two-story little league building. Now twenty years later, Sigel Field is an integral part of the athletic community.
Sigel also kept busy in his retirement years as a member of the Woodland Lion's Club. He helped on many projects including calendar and apple cider sales. Sigel helped with the Lion's 1972 project of creating Hoffman Plaza at the end of Davidson Street. Always giving to the community, Sigel was responsible for providing the Woodland Community Center with a piano in 1974.
Sigel is also known in the community for his historical collections. He has obtained newspaper clippings from as early as 1901 when President McKinley was assassinated, diaries of early settlers, including one from Mrs. Ole Thompson who ran a ferry on the Lewis River, numerous photographs, including those of Woodland's first school classes and other mementos.
