DEATH  COMES  TO  GEORGE  W.  HILLIGOSS
----------
For Many Years Head Of The Big Coal Firm
Of George W. Hilligoss & Son
One Of City's Respected And Successful Business Man
----------
George W. Hilligoss, one of the best known retired business men of this city, died suddenly this morning at 11 o'clock, at his home in East Washington street, of acute dilation of the heart.  Mr. Hilligoss had been in a serious condition with heart trouble for several weeks and had been warned by his physician, Dr. T. G. Green, against unduly exerting himself.  This morning, however, he was feeling so much better that he decided a little walk would be a benefit to him.  He walked to the store owned by his daughter, which is near his home, and stayed there several minutes talking and laughing with several of his acquaintances who were there.  He then returned home and sat down in a chair to rest.  The fatal attack came on him suddenly and he was unconscious before members of the family could come to his assistance.  He was then taken to his bed and a physician called.  Nothing, however, could be done for him, and he died without regaining consciousness.  He was seventy-six years, three months and twenty-three days old at the time of his death.
Mr. Hilligoss had been engaged in business in Shelbyville for thirty-five years and during that time had firmly entrenched himself in the business circles of the city.  He began a draying business here in 1878 and met with success from the start.  His straightforwardness and perseverance won him many friends and a friend once always a friend.  About fifteen years ago he engaged in the coal business together with his dray line, but in a short time the coal business far out stripped the dray business.  Mr. Hilligoss retired from the active management of the business in 1910 and was succeeded by his sons, Lauren A. and  James, who are now managing the coal business and dray line.
Mr. Hilligoss was born September 13, 1836, near Homer, Rush County.  He was the thirteenth child of  Isaac and  Nancy Hilligoss.  In 1864 he was united in marriage to Miss Frances Raynes and in 1878 came to this city, where he has since resided.  Mr. Hilligoss was the last of a family of fourteen children, thirteen of whom reared families.  He is survived by two sons,  Lauren and  James, of this city, and three daughters,  Mrs. Katherine Chapman,  Mrs. Georgia Griffin  and  Mrs. Jane VanPelt, all of this city.  The funeral arrangements will not be announced until the family has heard from  Russell Hilligoss, a grandson, who is now in Florida.  The funeral will be in charge of Ralph J. Edwards.
