Albert W. McCorkle was the sheriff of Shelby Co. He was killed by a drunk,
Ed Kennedy, after pulling him out of a bar in which he had been involved in
a fight, Sat. Oct. 9, 1880. His remains and that of his family were moved to Forest Hill, because of
vandals. They are on the top of a hill in unmarked graves.
From the 6-21-2000 Shelbyville News: Ed and his brother, Gibb had been in a fight in Hardebeck's Saloon at the SW corner of Harrison & Broadway. McCorkle & others went in to disperse, the brothers cursed McCorkle, and after words, Ed pulled out a pistol and shot him in the chest. Kennedy's trial began in Dec 1883 and lasted 17 days. He was convicted of manslaughter and given 2 years in prison. McCorkle's obituary from the Shelbyville Democrat says he was born near Lewis Creek in 1847. |
"Albert W. McCorkle murdered at the hands of an assassin while in the
discharge of
duty as sheriff. A sympathizing public mourns his death and
thousands weep."
