Comes now the Grand Jury for the Term aforesaid, and present in open Court the
following Indictment, to-wit:
“STATE OF INDIANA, SHELBY COUNTY, SS:
The State of Indiana VS
Elizabeth H. Bassett Indictment for Larceny
The Grand Jurors of Shelby County, in the State of Indiana, good and lawful
men, duly and legally impaneled, charged and sworn to inquire into felonies
and certain misdemeanors in and for the body of said County of Shelby in the
name and by the authority of the State of Indiana, on their oaths present that
one Elizabeth H.
Bassett, late of said County, on the 10th day of August, A.D. 1879, at
said County and State aforesaid, did then and there unlawfully steal and
feloniously steal, take and carry away of the personal goods and chattels of William
H. Harrell, the following articles towit; 3 quilts of the value of
3.33 1/3 dollars each; 2 blankets of the value of 1.50 dollars each;
5 sheets of the value of 50 cents each; 5 Boalster Slips of the value of
25 cents each; 2 ruffled Pillows & Slips, of the value of 25 cents
each; 1 Table Cloth of the value of 2.00 dollars; 1 white Table
Cloth of the value of 50 cents, 6 towels of the value of 16 2/3 cents each;
one pair of pillow ticks of the value of 30 cents; 1 set of Window
Blinds of the value of 1.00 dollar; 2 Chimese of the value of 37 ½
cents each; 3 pairs of Lady's Drawers of the value of 33 1/3 cents each;
1 Flannel Skirt of the value of 1.00 dollar; 5 yards of Calico of the
value of 35 cents; 2 pairs of Men's Drawers of the value of 37 ½ cents
per pair; 1 coal oil lamp of the value of 50 cents; 1 lot of Toys
and vases of the value of 1.00 dollar; 1Clothes Brush of the value of 25
cents; 1 glass dish of the value of 10 cents; 1 work Basket of the
value of 10 cents; 1 sack of Beans of the value of 50 cents; and
of the aggregate value of 28.35 dollars.

And the Grand Jurors aforesaid upon their oaths aforesaid
by way of second and for the count and presentment do further present and
charge that the said Elizabeth H. Bassett on the day and year aforesaid at the
County of Shelby and State of Indiana did unlawfully and feloniously steal,
take and carry away the following personal property, goods and chattels towit:
3 Quilts of the value
of 3.33 1/3 dollars each; 2 Blankets of the value of 1.50 dollars each;
5 sheets of the value of 50 cents each; 5 Boalster Slips of the value of
25 cents each; 2 Ruffled Pillow Slips of the value of 25 cents each;
1 Table Cloth of the value of 2.00 dollars; 1 Table Cloth of the value
of 50 cents, 6 Towels of the value of 16 2/3 cents each; 1 Pair of
Pillow Ticks of the value of 30 cents; 1 set of Window Blinds of the
value of 1.00 dollar; 2 Chimese of the value of 37 ½ cents each;
3 Pairs of Lady's Drawers of the value of 33 1/3 cents per pair; 1
Flannel Skirt of the value of 1.00 dollar; 5 yards of Calico of the
value of 35 cents; 2 Pairs of Men's Drawers of the value of 37 ½ cents
each, 1 Coal Oil Lamp of the value of 50 cents; 1 lot of Toys and Vases
of the value of 1.00 dollar; 1 Clothes Brush of the value of 25 cents;
1 Glass Dish of the value of 10 cents; 1 Work Basket of the value of 10
cents; 1 sack of Beans of the value of 50 cents, then and there the
personal goods and property of William H. Harrell; and said Elizabeth H.
Bassett at the same time and place and as a part of the same act did so
unlawfully, and feloniously steal, take and carry away the goods and chattels
of Mary J. Boyd then
and there in the custody and upon the premises of the said Harrell and
commingled with the above described goods the following articles towit:
1 Pair of Slippers of
the value of 1.50 dollars; 1 Calico Suit of the value of 2.00 dollars;
1 Petty Coat of the value of 1.50 dollars; 1 Chimese of the value of 75
cents; 3 Pairs of Hose of the value of 50 cents per pair; 1 Hair
Brush of the value of 60 cents; 1 Hand Mirror of the value of 1.50
dollars; 1 Fine Comb of the value of 50 cents; 1 Coarse Comb of
the value of 20 cents; 1 Tooth Brush of the value of 35 cents; 1
Pair of Drawers of the value of 50 cents; 3 ½ yards of Calico of the
value of 25 cents; 1 Lady's Hand Basket of the value of 1.50 dollars;
1 Draping Comb of the value of 45 cents; 1 Pair of Kid Gloves of the
value of 1.00 dollar; 1 Bottle of Hair Oil of the value of 35 cents;
1 Handkerchief of the value of 25 cents. The aggregate value of the said
several articles so unlawfully and feloniously stolen, taken and carried away
from the said Harrell and Boyd then and there being the sum of Forty-two and
.05 dollars.

On this 21st day of
November 1879, Came William H. Harrell and filed his affidavit charging the
defendant with the crime of Grand Larceny thereupon Issued a warrant against
said defendant and delivered the same to John
B. Harrell, Constable, of Brandywine Township, November 21st 1879.
Warrant returned with the body of the defendant endorsed as follows towit—
I have arrested the within named defendant and now have her body in Court.

Now comes the defendant herein and waivers an examination and thereupon the
Court fixed the defendants Bond in the sum of one hundred and fifty (150)
dollars for her appearance at the Shelby Circuit Court on the fixed day of its
next term. The defendant having entered in to said Bond with Benjamin H.
Boon as surety for her appearance at said time at the Shelby Circuit Court.
Thereupon the defendant was released from Custody.

being duly sworn according to law, deposeth and saith: That on or about the
10th day of August in the year 1879, at the County of Shelby and State of
Indiana Elizabeth H.
Bassett (formerly Elizabeth
H. Williams) late of said County, did then and there unlawfully and
feloniously steal, take and carry away 3 quilts, $10.00 - 2 Blankets 3.00 - 5
sheets 2.50 –2 table cloths 3.00 – 5 bolsters with feathers 8.00 – 6
Hand towels 1.50 – 1 glass lamp 30 cents – 1 Lot of toys 00 – 1 pr.
Men's drawers 1.00 – 1 sack of beans 50 cents – the personal property of
the affiant and of the value in all of Thirty dollars, contrary to the form of
the Statutes in such cases made and provided, and against the peace and
dignity of the State of Indiana.

Shelby, and State of Indiana, then and there to answer the complaint of Robert
Bassett For Divorce, and of this writ make due return.

complains of the Elizabeth
H. Bassett defendant
and says that towit:
On the ____ day of ___
18__ at the County of Shelby and State of Indiana he intermarried with and
became the husband of the defendant; that as husband and wife they lived
together from said date until the 7th day of January AD 1880 when said
defendant was charged, tried and convicted and sentenced of an infamous crime
towit: The offense of Grand Larceny in having on towit; the 10th
day of August AD 1879 at said County of Shelby and State of Indiana unlawfully
and feloniously stolen, taken and carried away certain personal goods, wares,
merchandise, chattels and wearing apparel there and then the property of William
H. Harrell and Mary J. Boyd, of the value of Forty-three and
.05 dollars, that said felony was charged against said Elizabeth
H. Bassett by the
Grand Jury of said County at the December Term 1879 thereof and a copy of the
Judgment of the conviction of said defendant and her sentence to imprisonment
in the Reformatory of the State of Indiana for the period of two years is made
part hereof and marked “Exhibit A”; And the Plaintiff avers that
said Judgment of the Shelby Circuit Court remains in full force and of binding
effect unreversed and unappealed from and said defendant is now serving, for
said crime, her term of imprisonment in the penal department of the female
reformatory for the state of Indiana. Wherefore and by reason of the premises
the plaintiff sues and demands a judgment of divorce from said defendant and
for all other proper relief.

Township in said County, that by occupation he is a farm laborer.
