This indenture made this fifteenth day of March in the year of our Lord
Eighteen hundred and forty one between John Ballard Sen. and William
Steers overseers of the Poor of Liberty township in the County of Shelby
and state of Indiana of the one part & Robert B. Peak of the County
aforesaid of the other part witnesseth that the said overseers of the Poor
have put and place and bound and do by these presents doth place and bind Martha
Stewart a poor girl aged sixteen years on the twenty seventh day of
September 1841, as an apprentice to the said Robert B. Peak to be taught the
use and art of all Mature Uses of female Impliments that is
used by females in general by domestics and to live with & serve him the
said Robert B. Peak as an apprentice for the term of two years six months
& eleven days from this date that is to say until the said Martha Stewart
shall arrive to the age of Eighteen years if the said Martha Stewart shall so
live and the said overseers do by these presents give unto the said Robert B.
Peak all the right power & authority over the said Martha Stewart and her
services during the said term which by the Laws of this state a master has in
and over a lawful indentured apprentice and the said Robert B. Peak in
consideration thereof doth on his part covenant promise and agree to and with
the said overseers and their successors in office each and every of them &
with the said Martha Stewart that he will teach and instruct the said Martha
Stewart as his apprentice or cause her to be well taught and instructed in the
art of Female industry after the best way and manner that he can and also to
teach and instruct the said apprentice or cause her to be taught the habits of
Morality and during the term of her apprenticeship to provide and allow to her
sufficient meat drink washing lodging and wearing apparel and all other things
necessary for an apprentice during her said term of apprenticeship and the
said Robert B. Peak further covenants to furnish and give to the said
apprentice at the completion of her aforesaid term of service two fine dresses
a bonnet of quality and a fine pair of shoes worth twelve dollars and fifty
cents.
In witness whereof the said parties have hereunto set their hand and seals,
the day and year above written signed sealed and delivered in presents of
