Indentures of Apprentice Overseers of the Poor to J. Morrison

This indenture made this Eleventh day of February in the year of our Lord
Eighteen hundred and thirty six, Between Elisha Mayhew and
John
Morrison overseers of the poor of Addison Township in the County of Shelby
and state of Indiana of the one part, and John Morrison of the County aforesaid
of the other part Witnesseth: That the said Overseers have put, placed and
bound, and do by these presents put, place and bind John Grimes
a poor
boy aged fourteen years and five months and three days, as an apprentice to the
said John Morrison to be taught the art, trade and occupation of a Chair Maker
and house painter, which he the said John Morrison now uses; and to live with
and serve him the said John Morrison as an apprentice for the term of six years,
six months and twenty seven days from this date, that is to say until he the
said John Grimes shall arrive to the age of twenty one years if the said John
Grimes shall so long live. And the said overseers do by these presents give unto
the said John Morrison, all the right power and authority over the said John
Grimes and his services during the said term, which by the laws of this state a
master has in and over a "lawfully indentured apprentice" the said
John Grimes during all which time or term, the said apprentice, his said master,
well and faithfully shall serve; his secrets keep, and his lawful commands every
where at all times readily obey; he shall do no damage to his said master, nor
willfully suffer it to be done by others. At cards, dice or any other unlawful
game he shall not play; nor matrimony contract; Taverns, alehouses, or places of
gaming he shall not haunt, or frequent without his masters consent, during the
said time. And the said John Morrison on his part, in consideration thereof doth
covenant and agree to and with the said Overseers and their successors in office
and each and every of them, and with the said John Grimes, that he will teach
and instruct the said John Grimes as his apprentice, or cause him to be well and
sufficiently taught and instructed, in the art, trade and occupation of a Chair
Maker and house painter, after the best way and manner that he can. And also to
give the said apprentice nine months day schooling; and to train him to habits
of industry and morality; and during the term of his apprenticeship to provide,
lodging and apparel, and all other things necessary for an apprentice during his
said term of apprenticeship. And the said John Morrison further covenants and
agrees to furnish and give to the said apprentice at the expiration of his
aforesaid term of service, two new suits of wearing apparel worth at least sixty
dollars
