Overseers of Poor to Indenture
John F. Ballard upon James Stewart

This indenture made this fifteenth day of March in the year of our Lord Eighteen hundred and forty one between John Ballard Sen. and William Steers Overseers of the poor in Liberty Township in the County of Shelby and state of Indiana of the one part and John F. Ballard of the county aforesaid of the other part witnesseth that the said overseers have put and placed and Bind James Stewart a poor Boy aged Eighteen years old the twenty sixth day of July 1841 as an apprentice to the said John F. Ballard to be taught the art trade and occupation of a Farmer which he the said John F. Ballard now uses and to live with and to serve him the said John F. Ballard as an apprentice for the term of three years four months & Eleven days from this Date that is to say until he the said James Stewart arrives to the age of twenty one years if the said James Stewart shall live so long and the said overseers do by these presents give unto the said John F. Ballard all the Right power and authority over the said James Stewart and his services during the said term which by the Laws of this state a master has in and over a Lawfully indentured apprentice and the said John F. Ballard in Consideration thereof Doth on his part covenant promise and agree to and with the said overseers and their successors in office to Each & Every of them and with the said James Stewart as his apprentice or cause him well & sufficiently taught in the art of Farming after the best way and manner that he can & also to teach & instruct the said apprentice or cause him to be taught & structed to read Write & Cipher so far as the said James Stewart can be taught in six month schooling and train him to the habits of Industry and morality & during the term of his apprenticeship to provid and allow to him sufficient meat drink washing Lodging and apparel & all other things necessary for an apprentice during his said term of apprenticeship and the said John F. Ballard further covenants and agrees to furnish and give to the said apprentice at the Expiration of his aforesaid term of service one New suit of wearing apparel good woolen Janes and one fur hat at the end of his term.
