OVERSEERS  OF  THE  POOR  OF  HANOVER  TOWNSHIP  INDENTURE

            This Indenture made this Eighth day of August One thousand Eight hundred and forty five between Bruce Johnson and William Blivens Overseers of the Poor of Hanover Township in the County of Shelby and state of Indiana of the One part and Isaac Hurst of the County aforesaid of the other part Witnesseth that the said Overseers of the poor have put and placed and bound and do by these presents put place and bind General George Wayne Thornberry a poor boy aged Eleven years five months an apprentice to the said Isaac Hurst to be taught the art and mystery of Farming which he the said Isaac Hurst now follows to live with and serve him the said Isaac Hurst as an apprentice for the term of Nine years and seven months from this date, that is to say until the said General George Wayne Thornberry shall arrive to the age of Twenty One years of the said General George Wayne Thornberry shall so long live and the said Overseers do by these presents give unto the said Isaac Hurst all the right powers and authority over the said General George Wayne Thornberry and over his services during the said term which by the Laws of this state a Master has in and over a lawful indentured apprentice and the said Isaac Hurst in consideration thereof doth on his part Covenant promise and agree to and with the said Overseers and their successors in Office and each and every of them that he will teach and instruct the said General George Wayne Thornberry as his apprentice or cause him to be made and sufficiently instructed in the art and mystery of Farming after the best way and Manner that he can and also to teach and instruct the said apprentice or cause him to be taught or instructed to spell read and write and to teach and instruct the said apprentice in the science of Arthmetic to the Double rule of three inclusive at least and during his term of apprenticeship to provide and allow to him sufficient meat drink washing lodging and wearing apparel and all other things necessary for an apprentice and the said Isaac Hurst further covenants and agrees to furnish and give the said apprentice at the expiration of his aforesaid term of service a horse saddle and bridle of the value of Fifty five dollars and also a freedom suit of cloth of broad cloth of the value of thirty dollars at least and the said Isaac Hurst further covenants and agrees to and with the said Overseers to pay the said apprentice at the expiration of the said term aforesaid to pay the said apprentice the further sum of one hundred dollars provided the said Isaac Hurst has on account of the said apprentice to pay no extraordinary or uncommon doctors bills.
