OVERSEERS OF POOR INDENTURE
To Brightwell Thompson

This Indenture made this twenty Eighth day of May in the year of our Lord
Eighteen Hundred and Fifty (1850) Between Allen Sexson and Elbridge
G. Mayhew Overseers of the Poor of Addison Township in the County of
Shelby and State of Indian of the one part and Brightwell Thompson of
the County aforesaid of the other part, Witnesseth that the said Overseers of
the Poor have put placed and Bound and by these present put place and Bind James
R. Walker a Poor Boy and who has been chargable as a Pauper in said
Township Aged six years seven months and fourteen days as an Apprentice to the
said Brightwell Thompson to be taught the Art and Mistery of farming and the
duties pertaining there to and to live with and serve him the said Brightwell
Thompson as an apprentice for the term of Fourteen years four months and
sixteen days That is to say until he the said James R. Walker shall arrive at
the age of Twenty one years if the said parties should live that long and the
said Overseers do by these presents give unto the said Brightwell Thompson all
the right power and Authority over the said James R. Walker and his service
during the term which the Laws of this state a Master has in and over a
lawfully Indentured Apprentice.
And the said Brightwell Thompson in consideration thereof doth on his part
covenant promise and agree to and with the said Overseers of the Poor and
their Successors in office and each and Every of them and with the said James
R. Walker that he the said Brightwell Thompson will teach and Instruct the
said James R. Walker as his Apprentice or cause him to be well and
sufficiently taught and Instructed in the art and Mistery and Occupation of
Farming after the Best way and Manner that he can and Allow to teach and
Instruct the said James R. Walker or cause him to be taught and Instructed in
a Good school two years and three Months during his said Term of
Apprenticeship and well and faithfully to find and provide for the said
Apprentice Good and sufficient meat drink Clothing and lodging and other
necessaries fit and convenient for Such an Apprentice during the term
aforesaid and at the Expiration there of shall give unto the said Apprentice a
Good Horse saddle & Bridle worth at least Seventy five Dollars also two
Good suits of wearing Apperil one suitable for Sundays and the other for
Working days.
In Witness thereof the Parties have hereunto Set their hands and Seals the

I Joseph M. Simms One of Justices of the Peace of Said County do hereby
certify that the above named Elbridge G. Mayhew Allen Sexton and Brightwell M.
Thompson came personally before me and acknowledged the foregoing Instrument
of writing to be their Voluntary Act and deed for the purposes therein
mentioned.
