Last Will and Testament of John Monroe
I, John Monroe of the County of Rush and State of Indiana do make and publish this my last will and Testament hereby revoking and making void all former wills by me at any time heretofore made. First I direct that my body be decently interred and that my funeral be conducted in a manner corresponding with my estate and situation in life; and as to such worldly estate as it has pleased God to entrust me with I dispose of the same in the following manner (to wit)
I direct first that all my just debts and funeral expenses by paid as soon after my decease as possible out of the first moneys that shall come into the hands of my Executor from any portion of my estate.
I direct that my real estate which I may have in my possession at my decease shall be and remain in the hands of my wife Mary if she be then living for her own use and for the support of my two sons, Joshua and Ephraim Monroe - insane persons - if they be living at my decease and after the decease of my wife Mary if she should outlive myself I direct that my real estate after settling all just demands against it shall be exclusively for the use and benefit of my two sons Joshua and Ephraim Monroe if they should still be living.
I direct that all the personal estate I may have at my decease after paying all just debts and expenses shall be for the use and benefit of my wife Mary and be at her disposal during her lifetime.
And I hereby make and ordain my sons John Monroe and Joseph Monroe executors of this my last will and testament.
In witness whereof I John Monroe the Testator have hereunto set my hand and seal this twelfth Day of June in the year of our Lord Eighteen hundred and forty-seven.
John Monroe [Seal}
