The superior court seems to be a popular place at present for the
filing of divorce suits. A new complaint was entered on the docket today by
Attorney M. O. Sullivan, acting for Mrs. Effie Basey, of Marion township.
She asks for a divorce from her husband, Sanford Basey, for one hundred
dollars alimony, for twenty-five dollars attorney fees and for the custody of
their children - Herman, aged five years, and China,
aged ten
months. She also asks that the court make further reasonable provisions for the
support of herself and the children.
In reciting the causes have led to the filing of the complaint,
Mrs. Basey states that her husband on the eleventh of August threatened to kill
her. She says she left home as soon as he made the threat and declared he would
kill her if he found her there on his return. She says she took the children and
walked with them to this city, a distance of four and a half miles, for fear her
husband would return and carry his threat into execution. She says she still
fears her husband and that it will be impossible for them ever to live together
again. The couple were married January 11, 1902. Mrs. Basey says her husband has
long been treating her cruelly and inhumanly, that he has failed to provide her
with clothing and shoes, that he has frequently struck her with his fists, that
he has falsely accused her of intimacy with other men and that he has spent his
money on lewd women in this city. She avers that she had to take in washing to
provide herself and the children with clothing and shoes. She says her husband
is very high-tempered and unjustly jealous.
