Lingers Since Last Thursday When Husband Became Demented,
Attacked Her and Then Ended His Own Life
-----------
Mrs. Maude Eck Daniels, 40 years old, daughter of
Mrs. George
[Rebecca] Hensley, of near this city, and a native of Shelbyville, died
today at the Grace Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, from injuries she received
last Thursday when she was struck over the head by her husband, who subsequently
committed suicide.
Word of the death of Mrs. Daniels was received here this afternoon
by the Democrat. She had been in a critical condition since she was attacked
last Thursday night by her husband in their apartment at Detroit. An
investigation by Detroit authorities disclosed that Mr. Daniels, a prominent
real estate owner of Detroit, had become mentally unbalanced, and this condition
led to the double tragedy.
After beating his wife into insensibility with an iron wrench, Mr.
Daniels went to the bathroom of their apartment and turned on the gas to end his
life. He had been dead several hours when the tragedy was discovered by a
caretaker of the apartment, who called the authorities and arranged for the
removal of Mrs. Daniels to the hospital.
Mrs. Hensley had been at the bedside of her daughter in the Detroit
hospital since last Friday. Some hopes were held at the start for the recovery
of Mrs. Daniels, but these were dispelled Monday, when her condition became more
critical. Her skull was fractured from the blows of the wrench and she did not
regain consciousness at any time before her death today.
Mrs. Daniels was a cripple and spent her entire early life in
Shelbyville, where she was well known. Arrangements for the funeral and burial
had not been completed this afternoon and it was not known whether the body
would be brought to Shelbyville.

Mother of Mrs. Daniels on Way to Shelbyville
with Remains
-----------
The body of Mrs. Maude Daniels, who died at 3 o’clock
Tuesday morning in a hospital at Detroit, Michigan, was shipped from that city
this afternoon and will arrive in Shelbyville some time Thursday. Mrs. George
Hensley, north of this city, mother of Mrs. Daniels, is accompanying the body to
Shelbyville, where the funeral and burial will be conducted.
This information was contained in a message received this afternoon
by the Democrat. Relatives of Mrs. Daniels had not heard today of the funeral or
burial arrangements and they had not been informed by Mrs. Hensley of the death
of Mrs. Daniels. They feared that Mrs. Hensley had suffered a collapse after the
death of her daughter, but this was found not the case when an investigation was
made by the Democrat.

MRS. HENSLEY REMAINS
WITH BODY IN DETROIT
-----------
Relatives of Mrs. George
Hensley, residing northwest of here on the
Boggstown road, became alarmed Thursday night, when she failed to arrive in
Shelbyville, with the body of her daughter, Mrs. Maude Eck Daniels, who
died Tuesday at a hospital in Detroit from wounds caused by her husband, who
later killed himself. A communication with Mrs. Hensley disclosed that she has
changed her arrangements about bringing the body to Shelbyville immediately and
she was not certain when she will return to her home here. Mrs. Hensley did not
state why her plans had been changed or whether she will bring the body of her
dead daughter to Shelbyville later. She was called by Mr. Hensley and confirmed
the report that Mrs. Daniels has passed away.

-----------oOo-----------
A man named Daniels, an engineer at the portable Saw Mill at Flatrock Station, in Washington township, while out rabbit-hunting on last Saturday, accidentally shot himself. It seems that he had fired one load from his double-barreled shot gun at a rabbit, and missing his game, he got on a stump to watch the course the rabbit took, attempting to load his gun at the same time, when the gun slipped from his hand, discharging the contents of the other barrel in his abdomen. He is in a very precarrious [sic] condition, and cannot possibly recover.
