To the Citizens of the City of
Shelbyville:
1st. To
the Republican who voted for me for the office of Mayor, I thank you heartily
for the support you gave me on Tuesday last.
2nd. To the
Democrats who supported me, you have my heartfelt thanks. Considering the
immense difficulties we had to encounter, the earnest desire on the part of a
portion of the Democracy to elect their candidates, the liquor interest, and
[?..ted] influences brought to bear upon me, together with dissensions in our
own ranks, growing out of petty spites and jealousies, and downright treachery
on the part of others, to which must be added quite a number of illegal
votes. All those things conspiring against me, I consider that I done well
and believe that by an honest verdict of citizens of Shelbyville I would be the
mayor. I quit the field with no ill feeling toward my opponent. We
have long been friends, and I hope we will remain such in the future.
Again I thank you one and
all for the splendid vote you gave me, and of which I shall always feel
proud.
