SHELBYVILLE, Ind., Sept. 25. -- John
Walsh, champion walker, was here a short time last night. He
was walking on a wager for $5,000 put up by William R. Hearst,
that he could walk from Boston to San Francisco, Cal., leaving Boston Aug 12th
and arriving in the Western city Nov 10. He said that he had covered over
17000 miles and that he had crossed the continent three times. He always
follows the pikes and when arriving in each town secures the signature of the
mayor and other prominent citizens.
