I. U. ATHLETE HELD ON
MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE

Shelbyville, Ind., Jan.1
Ernest Applas, 63, of Shelbyville, died in the Major hospital here today
of injuries suffered when he was struck by a hit-and-run motorist while
crossing a downtown street last night. Officers arrested Kenneth Gorrell,
20, Indiana University athlete, and a native of Flat Rock, on a charge
of manslaughter, after Everett Norwood of Westport, witnessed the
hit-and-run automobile. Gorrell later was released on $5,000 bond.
