ANOTHER WAR VETERAN
ANSWERED FINAL CALL
----------
Cornelius Cayton, of Fairland,
Expired Suddenly this Afternoon
----------
(From Monday’s Daily)
Cornelius Cayton, 70 years old, a native of Shelby county, one of the
highly esteemed and respected residents of Brandywine township, a veteran of the
civil war, died very suddenly this afternoon at two-thirty o’clock in the
Fairland cemetery, where he is employed as sexton.
The burial of Mr. Isaac Sexton, of Moral township, had just been made
in the cemetery and the crowd had all left except two or three men who were
assisting Mr. Cayton at the grave. Without a struggle he fell to the ground and
within five breaths he had passed away. Dr. J. W. Snyder was summoned, but the
death angel had called and claimed the soul before the physician arrived.
Mr. Cayton was removed to his home in Fairland following the sudden death.
Deceased was born and reared in this county, but for many years he resided in
Illinois. He possessed a most pleasing personality and easily made friends with
all he met, and the news of his death will bring sadness to many homes.
When the great civil war broke out Mr. Cayton was one of the first to offer
his services for the preservation of the Union. He fought bravely throughout the
bitter war and at the end received an honorable discharge.
Besides his aged wife, deceased is survived by one brother,
Burl Cayton,
of London; a son, Fred Cayton, of Oakland, California; a daughter,
Mrs. Emma
Koonze, of Decatur, Illinois, and a number of nieces and other relatives.
The funeral arrangements had not been made at time for press and will be
announced later by Ralph J. Edwards, undertaker in charge. The county coroner,
Dr. G.I. Inlow, of Blue Ridge, was called, but he had made no announcement as to
the cause of death at a late hour this afternoon.
