John Collins Died Suddenly of Heart Trouble
----------
Started to Plow, But Had Proceeded
Only Fifteen or Twenty Feet
----------
John Collins, aged about fifty, died suddenly of heart trouble this morning shortly after six o’clock on the farm of Charles McCain, of
near Bengal. When found the man was lying on top of the plow with which he had been working.
Yesterday he complained of pains in the side but this morning after getting up he ate a hearty breakfast and made no complaints. He hitched up a plow and started to work. When he had proceeded fifteen or twenty feet, Mrs. McCain saw him stoop down but thought that he was merely getting down to fix the plow. About ten minutes later it was discovered that he was dead, his body lying
across the implement.
Collins was a widower, his wife having burned to death eight or nine years ago. He is survived by one son, Amos Collins, who is employed at the Hodell factory in this city. The funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at two o’clock at the Second Mt. Pleasant church, the Rev. Herman Schwartzkopf officiating. Interment will take place in the Second Mt. Pleasant cemetery.

Committed Suicide by
Shooting Himself With a Flobert Rifle
----------------
This morning at 3:30 o’clock, in a
small one-roomed log cabin in Walkerville, near the entrance to the
fair ground, Thomas Collins put out the life that was given
him fifty-six years ago. He had been threatening his life for
several years and his suicide is no surprise to those who were
intimately acquainted with him. On retiring last night he informed
his wife that he would be a dead man before morning. Mrs. Collins
had been so accustomed to these threats, however, that she paid no
particular attention to this his last one. At about three o’clock
this morning she was awakened by Collins who was attempting to reach
a flobert rifle, No. 22, which hung in a rack near the bed. She
jumped out of bed and reached him just as he had removed it. She
begged and pleaded with him not to use it; but he was determined to
carry out the threat, and pushing her to one side, placed the barrel
of the gun to his head and pulled the trigger. The bullet entered
the right side of his head just above the ear. He fell to the floor
and his wife ran out and gave the alarm and the neighbors gathered in
and Dr. Tindall was summoned, but medical aid was of no use as he was
fatally injured and died at five o’clock, being unconscious all the
time. About two months ago Collins attempted to commit suicide by
taking two tablespoons full of Paris green but it was pumped out of
him. He was of a suicidal turn of mind and was determined to take
his life, no other cause can be assigned for the rash act. He leaves
besides his wife two small boys. His remains will be buried at
Forest Hill tomorrow afternoon at two o’clock. D. B. Wilson &
Son have charge of the remains. The Coroner was called and is
holding an inquest this afternoon.
