Former Edinburgh Girl Injured
Fatally In Wisconsin Accident
----------
Susan E. Hughes,  19, Elkhorn, Wis., and formerly of Edinburgh, died Saturday as a result of severe head injuries she received in a traffic accident Friday night in that state.  Terry Adair,  26, 509 North Clay, Edinburgh, was listed in satisfactory condition at the Elkhorn, Wisconsin Hospital.  Adair and Miss Hughes were riding a motorcycle north on Wisconsin Highway 67 near Highway 12 at 11:04 p.m. Friday when a car driven by  Kayla Dewitt,  21, Elk Grove, Ill., reportedly pulled in front of them, according to the accident report at the Walworth County Wisconsin sheriff's department.  Adair hit the Dewitt car, and the impact threw him and Miss Hughes from the motorcycle, police said.  Adair suffered a broken right leg and arm.  Miss Hughes received severe head injuries and a broken right arm.  Police were not sure if the two were wearing helmets.  Wisconsin does not have a helmet law, police said.  Persons in the Dewitt car were not injured.  Adair and Miss Hughes were taken to the Elkhorn Hospital by Elkhorn Ambulance Service.  Miss Hughes was later transferred to another hospital.
Miss Hughes was the daughter of  Mr. and Mrs. Donald G. Hughes  of Route 4, Box 122, Elkhorn, Wisc., former Edinburgh residents.
Funeral services conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Derskens Funeral Home in Elkhorn with burial there.  Rainbow for Girls memorial service was at the funeral home at 8 o'clock Monday night.
Miss Hughes was born Dec. 27, 1958 in Shelbyville.  She was a 1977 graduate of Edinburgh Community High School and a past worship advisor of the Order of Rainbow for Girls at Edinburgh.  She had moved with her family to Elkhorn about 1 1/2 years ago.  Surviving with the parents are two sisters,  Diana and  Sherri,  both at home; maternal grandparents,  Mr. and Mrs. William Rumple  of Indianapolis and paternal grandparents,  Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hughes  of Flat Rock.

------------
James Hughes  was born in Lebanon County, Ohio, March 11, 1828 and died in London, Indiana, September 15, 1908.  He became a member of the Methodist Protestant church in his youth, and at the age of twenty was called to the ministry, for which cause he worked earnestly and faithfully, spending a number of years in the pulpits of Shelby County and was widely known throughout the state.
Among the many good and noble deeds of his life, the building of Allen chapel may be mentioned.  Having contributed all the financial aid in his power, he then labored with his hands in the building of the church until it was as it stands today—a testimony of one man’s unselfish endeavor.  Rev. Hughes was thrice wedded, first to  Miss Caroline Cline  in April 1848, and who died January 10, 1883.  He was next married to  Miss Sophelia Copple, of Fairview, who departed this life November 4, 1897, and on June 9, 1908 he married  Miss Sarah Owen, of London, who survives him.  He was the father of twelve children, eight of whom preceded him to the home beyond. Those who remain are  C. E. Hughes, of Bloomington;  Mrs. Mary Ball, of Carthage;  Mrs. Amelia Mease, of London, and  Mrs. Eliza Cook, of this place.  He was always firm and true to his friends, but the love he bore his family was sublimely beautiful, tender and affectionate.  M. G.

------------
Mrs. Sarah Hughes died at her residence in VanBuren township, in the afternoon on the first day of June, 1898, aged 69 years, 10 months and 10 days.  Mrs. Hughes was the widow of Robert Hughes who died in February 1882, one of the prominent and successful farmers of the northern part of the county.  Mrs. Hughes was born in Shelby county and lived in the county all her life.  She was a woman of most estimable character and was loved and respected by all who knew her.  She had been ill for many months preceding her death, and at times suffered much, but was patient and uncomplaining through all.  The funeral services were held at her late residence and was conducted by the Rev. Conner, of the Christian church, of Irvington, Indiana, on Friday morning at 10 o'clock.  The interment was in the Hanover cemetery in sight of which she was born.  She leaves nine children surviving her,  Mrs. E. H. Chadwick, of this city being one.  Good of heart, unassuming but capable in all things, kindly and gracious in all the relations of life, she is gathered at length like a sheaf of fully ripened wheat into the grateful garner of Heaven.  Edwards & Hageman have charge of the remains.     [Moved to Forest Hill Cemetery]
