HORRIBLE DEATH!
----------
George A. Ivie,
who removed from Georgia to this place several years ago,
with his family, came to his death on Monday evening in the following manner.
He
had been drinking during the day, and in the evening was observed by several to
be very drunk. He took the train for Fairland that passes here about six o’clock
p.m. Arriving there, his condition was observed by the Marshal, who followed him
to some shoe shop in the town for the purpose of arresting him. The proprietor
of the shop told the Marshal he could not take him from there without a warrant.
He left for that purpose, and while away the shoe shop proprietor slipped Ivie
out, and piloted him to the railroad east of town . It is supposed that Ivie was
so drunk that in a few minutes after being left alone, he laid down on the track
and fell asleep, when the down freight came along and ran over him, horribly
mangling his body, and, of course, killing him instantly. In a short time
afterward he was discovered by some boys who had been fishing. An inquest held
over his body, the jury returning a verdict in accordance with the facts stated
above.
Ivie leaves a wife and several children very poor.
He was considered to be of
no benefit to his family—spending what he made for whisky. There are hundreds
and thousands of men who yearly meet a similar fate to that of Ivie, who have
been brought to their fate by contributing their means to enrich and extend the
borders of the whisky seller who gave them nothing but liquid hell fire in
return. It is high time this business was stopped!
