Fern Ida Kappes, 92, Waldron, died Tuesday, July 13, 2004, Major Hospital.
Born August 12, 1911, in Shelbyville, d/o  Wilbur and  Adie (Dellekamp) Snyder.
Married  Bernard Frederick Kappe s in April of 1939; he preceded her in death on May 16, 1974.
Survivors:  daughter, Mary Lou (husband Charles) Brown of Shelbyville; one son John (wife Barb) Kappes of Waldron; three sisters,  Ruth Clawson,  Mary Jane Walton  and  Catherine Schontrup,  all of Shelbyville; two brothers,  James Snyder  of Arizona and  David Snyder  of Shelbyville; seven grandchildren,  Alletta Thurston  of Waldron,  William Dwenger,  Chuck Brown  and  Matina Dellinger, all of Shelbyville,  Dena Caldwell  of Morristown,  Chris Brown  of Greenfield and  Rachelle Richards  of Belleville, Michigan; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
Preceded in death by three brothers, Wayne Snyder,  Richard E. Snyder,  Jay Snyder.
Shelby County resident most of her life.
Registered nurse at Margaret Mary Hospital, in Batesville, for 33 years and at Heritage House Convalescent Center for 14 years; retired 1976.
Graduated in 1929 from Shelbyville High School and in 1932 from St. Vincent University.
Member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.
Funeral services at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, with the Rev. Paul Landwerlen officiating. 
Interment:  St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Margery Kappes, 65, Waldron, died 8 p.m. Friday at son’s home in Hope.
Born in Switzerland County, April 1, 1920, to  Scott and  Ida (McClane) Furnish.
November 28, 1947, married  Virgil Kappes; he preceded her in death on January 16, 1975.
Homemaker and had resided in Waldron for 35 years.
Member of the Waldron Baptist Church, Waldron Community Club, Waldron Order of the Eastern Star No. 187, Shelby County Extension Homemakers, Waldron Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary and was president of the Senior Citizens of Waldron.
Survivors:  son, Wray Kappes, of Hope, and one grandson.
Brother preceded her in death.
Services: Glenn E. George Funeral Home, St. Paul. the Rev. Dwight Stinnett officiating.
Burial:  Van Pelt Cemetery.

Farmer.
Veteran of World War II, U.S. Army.
Member of Victory Post No. 70, American Legion, and the Waldron United Methodist Church.
Born January 10, 1921, in Shelby County, s/o  Otis and  Lena (Woods) Kappes.
November 28, 1947, married  Margery Furnish, who survives.
Other survivors:  son, Wray Kappes, R.R.1 Waldron and a brother, Lawrence Kappes, Mishawaka. 
One brother preceded in death.
Services:  Glenn E. George Funeral Home, St. Paul, the Rev. Ernest Anderson officiating.

MR. KAPPES DIES AT 64
Bernard F. Kappes, 64, R.R.1, Waldron, died Thursday, Major Hospital.
Lifelong resident of Shelby county.
Retired farmer.
Member of St. Vincent Catholic Church and the Batesville Eagles Lodge.
Born in this county June 24, 1909, the son of  John Edward  and  Caroline (Kolkmeier) Kappes.
April 9, 1939, married  Fern Snyder, who survives.
Also surviving are two children,  Mrs. Charles (Mary Lou) Brown  and  John Wilbur Kappes, both of Shelbyville, and six grandchildren.  Two brothers and a sister preceded in death.
Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Vincent Catholic Church, with the Rev. Joseph Laugel officiating.  Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Mrs. Lena Fern Kappes, 73, R.R.1 Waldron, Shelby County native, died Sunday, found at her home Monday.
Services:  Carmony-George Funeral Home, St. Paul, Rev. Paul Gentry officiating.
Burial:  Van Pelt Cemetery.
Born November 25, 1898,  d/o  James D. and  Jennie Woods. 
Married  Otis Kappes on October 1, 1919; he died January 25, 1972.
Surviving:  sons, Virgil Kappes, R.R.1, Waldron, and Lawrence Kappes, Acton; brothers, Elmer Woods, Shelbyville, and Marvin Woods, Flat Rock; sisters, Zelma Richardson and Gladys Kaster, Shelbyville, and Nellie Newton, Franklin, and four grandchildren.
Member of the Waldron Methodist Church.

Otis V. Kappes, 75, R.R.1, Waldron, died working near his home Tuesday.
Found by his son, Virgil Kappes, about 1:30 p.m.; Dr. Paul Inlow, Shelby County coroner, ruled his death was caused by a heart attack; had not been ill.
Services:  Carmony Funeral Home in St. Paul with the Revs. Paul A. Gentry and Robert Hampton officiating. 
Burial:  Van Pelt Cemetery.
Born in Liberty Township March 29, 1896, s/o  John and  Caroline (Kolkmeier) Kappes.
October 1, 1919, married Lena Woods; she survives.
Other survivors:  sons, Virgil Kappes, R.R.1, Waldron, and Lawrence Kappes, Acton; four grandchildren; one brother Bernard Kappes, R.R.1, Waldron.
Lived in the Waldron community all his life.
Farmer and building contractor.
Member of the Waldron Methodist Church.

Shelbyville resident for the past eight years.
Born in Shelby County June 7, 1884.
Married  Edward V. Kappes who preceded in death in November, 1958.
Prior to 1958 Mrs. Kappes lived on R.R. 1, Waldron.
No immediate survivors.
Services:  Murphy Mortuary with Rev. C.M. Hager, officiating. 
Burial:  New Palestine Cemetery.

Rites Monday For St. Paul Optometrist

Dr. Charles F. Kappes, 84, widely known St. Paul optometrist, died at Major Hospital at 10:10 p.m. Thursday. 
Born near Rossburg, [Ripley County] Indiana, June 13, 1880, s/o  John and  Margaret (Clair) Kappes.
1900, moved to St. Paul and opened a jewelry store; practiced optometry there for over 40 years.
First married Veronica Hermesch and she preceded in death in November, 1960.
On May 13, 1961, he married Lola White and she survives with a daughter, Mrs. Mabel Simon of Indianapolis; a brother, John Kappes of Batesville; a sister, Mrs. Frank Berkmeier of R.R.6, Greensburg, three grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Services:  St. Vincent Catholic Church, Rev. Anthony Seger will officiate.
Burial will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery in Indianapolis.
Carmony Funeral Home, St. Paul.
Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary.
Member of the St. Paul Catholic Church.

DEATH  CLAIMS  E. V. KAPPES
County Resident, 56, Succumbs at Hospital

          Edward V. Kappes, 56, lifelong Shelby county farmer and carpenter, died at Major Hospital at 9:45 this morning following a brief illness. Mr. Kappes had not been well for the past three weeks and went to the hospital after becoming ill on a visit to Shelbyville this morning. Death was attributed to complications.
          Mr. Kappes, whose home was on east U.S. Highway 421, was born December 19, 1901, the son of John and Carrie (Kolkmeier) Kappes. His father resides at Waldron. He was married to Lulu Brown who survives with two brothers, and one sister, Otis and Bernard Kappes, and Mrs. Ola Posz, all of Waldron R.R.1.
          Services will be held at the Murphy Mortuary Wednesday at 10 a.m. with Rev. C.M. Hager officiating. Interment will be in the New Palestine Cemetery.

JOHN  KAPPES  DIES  IN  HOSPITAL
Rites Wednesday For Retired Contractor

          John F. Kappes, 80, retired cement contractor, died at Major Hospital Sunday at 5:30 p.m. following a 10-week illness of complication of diseases.  He had resided in the Waldron community most of his life and his home was on Waldron R.R.1.
          Born at Enochsburg, May 21, 1873, he was the son of Michael and Frances Kappes.  He was married to Caroline Kolkmeier and her death occurred in 1929. He is survived by three children, Otis and  Bernard Kappes  and  Mrs. William Posz, all of Waldron R.R.1.  Also surviving are five grandchildren; seven great grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Mary Meadows of Indianapolis.
          Mr. Kappes was a member of the St. Vincent Catholic Church and last rites will be held at the church Wednesday at 9 a.m. with the Rev. Anthony Seger officiating.  Burial will be in St. Joseph cemetery.

Mrs. Caroline Kappes Suffered Heart Attack
At Her Home Monday Afternoon

          Mrs. Caroline Kappes, age fifty-eight, wife of John E. Kappes, was found dead on the floor of their home in Liberty township, Monday afternoon by members of her family.  Mrs. Kappes had not been in good health for some time.  Monday she appeared in her usual health and had prepared the noon meal.  The men of the family left the house for a time and when they returned, about 1:45 o’clock, Mrs. Kappes was lying on the floor.  She was dead when found.  A physician stated that a heart attack had caused her death.
          Mrs. Kappes was born May 23, 1872, in the community in which she died, and practically all of her life had been spent there.  She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Kolkmeier, natives of Germany.  Mrs. Kappes was a member of the St. Vincent Catholic church.
          Besides the husband she leaves a daughter,  Mrs. Leola Marie Posz, and three sons,  Otis,  Bernard  and  Edward V. Kappes, all of Liberty township, and two brothers,  Frederick  and  Edward Kolkmeier, of the same community. Two grandchildren also survive.
          She had been married to Mr. Kappes March 21, 1894.
          Funeral services will be conducted at the St. Vincent church Wednesday morning at nine o’clock, and burial will be in St. Joseph cemetery in charge of Carmony Brothers.

Funeral Services Held At Indianapolis For
Mrs. Frances  Kappes  Today

          Funeral services were held in Indianapolis today for Mrs. Frances [Gamstetter] Kappes, age seventy-six, wife of  Nicholas Kappes, a former resident of Shelby County.  Burial was made in Indianapolis.  Mrs. Kappes died Tuesday at their home, 214 Oxford Street, Indianapolis, after an illness of four years.
          She was born [1850] in Germany and came to the United States with her parents when five years old.  The family settled in Oldenburg. On May 3, 1870 she was married to Mr. Kappes.  They lived in Waldron and also at Manilla before going to Indianapolis in 1903.  Mrs. Kappes was known to many persons in the Waldron community.  She was a member of St. Phillip Neri Catholic church, at Indianapolis.
          Besides the husband, she leaves two daughters,  Mrs. S. P. [Mary Vera] Meadows, of Indianapolis, and  Mrs. W. A. [Elizabeth] Crisler, of New Bethel; two sons,  John Kappes, of near Waldron, and  William J. Kappes, of Portland, Oregon; and a sister,  Sister Hermina, of Monroe, Missouri.
