Retta Leffler, 84, of Indianapolis, a former Shelbyville resident, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002,Indianapolis.
Born Mar. 7, 1918, in Indianapolis, d/o  Derk and Mary (Jackson) Van Dermullen.  Married  Edgar E. Leffler, who preceded her in death on Sept. 11, 1992.
Survivors include 4 sons, Edgar L. "Sonny" Leffler of Cave City, NC;  David W. Leffler  of Columbus;  Donald L. Leffler  of Indianapolis;  William E. Leffler  San Diego, Calif.; six daughters,  Mrs. Donald (Phyllis) Hall  of Milroy, Mrs. Jack (Anna) Schuck  of Shelbyville, Mrs. Wayne (Clarabelle) Warren  of Montreal, Mo.,  Mrs. Gerald (Patricia) Carman  of Hope,  Mrs. Paul (Sharon) Hathaway  of Atlanta, Ga.,  Katherine Sheppard  of Columbus.

Aaron Gaston Leffler, 77, St. Paul, died Saturday.
Born Aug. 22, 1921, in Decatur County to Earl A. and Floe (Hungerford) Leffler.  M arried Edith M. (Zinser) Leffler on Aug 22, 1942, and she survives.
Farmer for 50 years.
Served inthe U.S. Army during World War II.
Graduated from St. Paul High School in 1940.  Member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Greensburg.
Other survivors include daughter, Mrs. Phil (Roseaaron) Buening, St. Paul; a son, Rick Leffler, Brownsburg; a sister, Yuma Byard, Greensburg; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Born March 21, 1904, in St. Paul, s/o  Lewis  and  Myrtle Woodard Leffler.
Married  Helen Bruce  October 2, 1926; she died June 11, 1977.
Retired truck driver/operator for TeePee Restaurant.
Member of the Faith Baptist Church.
Surviving:  five sons,  Charles "Sonny" Leffler,  Jerry Leffler,  Billie Rex Leffler  and  Gary Leffler, all of Shelbyville, and  Jack Leffler, Whiteland; three daughters, Beverly Caudill (Jack),  Sherry Israel (Gary), both of Shelbyville,  Phyllis O'Brian (Jack), Fayetteville, N. Mrs. Bernice E. Leffler, 88, 126 N. Vine St., died Wednesday afternoon at the Heritage House Convalescent Center, where she had been a patient three months.
Born in Shelby County March 12, 1892 to Christopher and  Mildred (Hendrickson) Spellman.  She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Roscoe (Ruth Alice) Clapp of Lexington, Ky., three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.  One brother and three sisters preceded in death.

Lifetime Resident Of St. Paul:  Rites Friday
----------
          George L. Leffler Sr., 84, died at his home in St. Paul at 8:10 last night.  He had been in failing health for several years and seriously ill for one year.  Death was due to complications.
          Mr. Leffler was a lifetime resident of St. Paul and for many years was a tool dresser in the St. Paul quarries.  He was one of the oldest members of the St. Paul Christian Church, and was also a member of Waldron Lodge No. 17, F.& A. M., which will participate in the funeral services.  The son of  Michael and  Sarah (Phillips) Leffler, he was born in St. Paul July 22, 1868.  He was married September 15, 1892, to the former Maggie Davis, who survives with three children.  They are  Walter  of St. Paul and  Mrs. Cecil Matterm  and  Thelma Leffler  of Indianapolis.  Also surviving is a sister  Mrs. Sadie Davis  of Oblong, Illinois, eight grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.  Two sons,  Elton and  Michael,  and two brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.  Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the Carmony Funeral Home in St. Paul with Rev. Robert Walker officiating.   Burial will be in Paul Hill cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 10:00 a.m. Thursday.

Elton F. Leffler Dies In
Indianapolis; Rites Tuesday

          Elton F. Leffler,  52, Indianapolis attorney and native of Shelby county, ded Sunday at his home, 227 E. Fall Creek Parkway, Indianapolis,  He had been in failing health for the past year but his death, caused by a liver ailment, was sudden.
          THE  SON  OF  George and  Maggie (Davis) Leffler, Sr.,  he was born near St. Paul November 19, 1899.  He moved from the St. Paul community in 1918 and practiced law in Indianapolis after being admitted to the bar in 1924.  He was a member of the St. Paul Christian Church, the Columbia Club in Indianapolis and the Indianapolis Bar Association.
          In November, 1945, he married  Ann Louise Harmon  who survives with the parents, who reside at St. Paul; one brother,  Walter Leffler,  St. Paul, and two sisters,  Mrs. Cecil Mattern  and  Miss Thelma Leffler  of Indianapolis.
          FUNERAL  SERVICES  will be held at the Flanner and Buchanan Mortuary in Indianapolis Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. and last rites will be held at the new location of the Carmony Funeral Home in St. Paul Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.  Burial will be in Paul Hill cemetery.  Friends may call at the funeral home in St. Paul after 5:00 p.m. Tuesday.

DEATH  FOLLOWS  LONG  ILLNESS

          James Lewis Leffler, 82, former St. Paul blacksmith, died at his home in St. Paul at 11:25 a.m. Sunday following a long illness. Born May 29, 1860 near St. Paul, he was the son of Michael and Sarah Philipp Leffler. He was married to Mary A. Reed on August 30, 1883. Mr. Leffler was the oldest member of the St. Paul Christian Church. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Mary Leffler, four children, Lewis, Earl D. and George L. Leffler., Jr., and Mrs. Maude Garrison and five grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Fannie Jefferey and Mrs. Sadie Davis, both of Oblong, Ill., and one brother, George L. Leffler, Sr., of St. Paul. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the home, with the Rev. C.H. Grace, pastor of the St. Paul U.B. church, officiating. Burial will be in the Paul Hill cemetery in St. Paul, in charge of D.E. Carmony.

M.  J.  LEFFLER'S  FUNERAL  TODAY

          Michael John Leffler, age 49, a former resident of St. Paul. died at 9:30 p.m. Friday at the city hospital in Indianapolis.  Death was caused by lobar pneumonia.  He had been ill for two weeks.  He was born in St. Paul on April 28, 1893, the son of  George L. and Maggie Davis Leffler.  He was married to  Erma Wasson  on May 11, 1911, and to this union three children were born.  He had spent most of his life in and around St. Paul, but moved to Indianapolis several years ago where he was residing at the time of his death.  He was a member of the St. Paul Christian church. Survivors are the three sons,  Max and  Fay,  of Indianapolis, and  Gene,  of Camp Siebert, Ala., the parents, Mr. and Mrs. George L. Leffler, Sr.; two brothers,   Cecil Pierce,   of Indianapolis, and Walter, of  Lafayette; two sisters,  Thelma  and  Elton,  of Indianapolis, and three grandchildren.  Funeral services will be held at the home of the parents in St. Paul at 2:00 p.m. today with Rev. C.H. Grace, pastor of the St. Paul U.B. church, officiating.  Burial will be in Paul Hill cemetery in St. Paul in charge of D. E. Carmony, St. Paul funeral director.  Friends may call at the home of the parents at any time.

          In the death of  Samuel Leffler, 99, which occurred at his home in St. Paul at 9:30 o'clock Friday night, the state of Indiana lost its last Mexican War veteran.  Only three veterans of that war now remain in the entire United States.  Mr. Leffler had been seriously ill for the past eleven weeks.  Mr. Leffler was born in Butler county, Ohio, on June 14, 1829, the son of  Mr. & Mrs. Samuel Leffler.  He came to Shelby county when he was a child but most of his life was spent in Decatur county.  He served in the Mexican war, taking part in most of the important engagements.  Later he saw service in the Civil war.  Mr. Leffler and his father were carpenter contractors in and around St. Paul all of their lives and many of the farm buildings, of which they made a specialty, are still standing in that vicinity.
          ;The old veteran had a fund of interesting reminiscences and war stories of the early days of Indiana history.  His death is a subject of state wide interest.  Mr. Leffler's first wife, formerly  Miss Nancy Collier,  died in 1862. In 1867 he married  Miss Martha Sumpas,  who survives him.  The two children of his first marriage who are now living, are  Allen,  of St. Paul, and  Mrs. Alice Meyers,  of Los Angeles, California.  Mr. Leffler leaves also several children of his second marriage,  Mrs. Emma Garrison, of Indianapolis; Mrs. Eliza Reed, Mrs. Myrtle Price and  Mrs. Ollie Sink  all of St. Paul;  Mrs. Nora Price,  of Shelbyville; Eugene, of St. Paul, and  Ira  of Washington, Ind; thirty-three grandchildren and thirty great grandchildren. Mr. Leffler was a member of the United Brethern church of St. Paul, and was affiliated with the Veterans of Foreign Wars at Greensburg.  Funeral services will be held in the United Brethern church at St. Paul at two o'clock Monday afternoon, the Rev. Shaw officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery in charge of Morris Sleeth.

          Word has been received at St. Paul of the death of Douglas Leffler at Newton, Illinois.  He was a former resident of St. Paul, but had been living in Illinois for several years.  His death was caused by tuberculosis, from which he has been suffering for many months.  For a number of years he was sheriff of Jasper county, Illinois.  He was related to the  Wright  and  Ridlin families, and  Charles and George Wright went to Newton to attend the funeral services, which were held Friday afternoon.  The deceased is survived by a widow and four children—two sons and two daughters.  The sons are both rural carriers out of Newton.

          Mrs. Mary [Kanouse] Leffler, widow of the late  Solomon Leffler, died at the home of her son,  Jacob Leffler, one and a half mile south of St. Paul, at about eleven o’clock last night.  She was eighty-one years of age.  Her death was due to paralysis.  She was the mother of nine children, four of whom are now living.  Those surviving are  Thomas Leffler, of St. Paul;  Jacob Leffler, of near St. Paul;  Mrs. John [Susan] Reiger, of Noble township, and  Mrs. William A. [Elizabeth] Mitchell, of Noble township.  The deceased was a member of the United Brethren church.  The funeral services will be held at the home Thursday afternoon at two o’clock.

Summons comes Suddenly to Aged
St. Paul Man.

          Michael A. Leffler,  an aged resident of St. Paul, died suddenly while engaged in a conversation with his step-son,  Jerry Black,  and  Will Lawson  at the switch tower in the Big Four freight yards at nine o'clock this morning.
          While the three men were talking Mr. Leffler's two companions noticed that his jaw dropped and saliva ran from his mouth.  When they went to his assistance he asked them to open the window.  A few seconds later he sank from his chair to the floor and when Mr. Black picken him up he was dying.  A physician was summoned by telephone but before his arrival life was completely extinct.
          Mr. Leffler was 75 years of age and had lived nearly all his life in or near St. Paul.  He was a blacksmith by trade and had been engaged in that business since 1850.
          Only yesterday Mr. Leffler and his wife, who is aged and feeble, came to Greensburg to make their home with Mrs. Leffler's son, Jerry Black, and wife, at the corner of Washington and Carver streets.  Mr. Black is an operator at the switch tower and this morning Mr. Leffler walked down to see him at work.
          His death was due to heart failure.
          The body was taken to White's undertaking parlors and his children were notified of his death.
          He leaves a widow, three sons and four daughters.

          Henry Leffler  died at the residence of his daughter,  Mrs. John Townsend,  near St. Paul, at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, of senility.  Mr. Leffler was eighty-one years old.  The funeral will be held on Sunday morning at 11 o'clock in Union Chapel.  Interment at the Chapel cemetery.  The cortege will leave the house at 10:30 a.m.  Deceased left three grown children.  D. B. Williams & son in charge.
