Kent Lockman,  61, of Arlington died Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012, at St. Francis Hospital in Indianapolis.
Born April 9, 1950, in Shelbyville, he was the son of  Robert Devere and  Doris Jane (Linton) Lockman.  He married  Marianne Nelson  on May 23, 1972, and she survives.
Other survivors include son,  Matthew (Deana) Lockman  of Louisville, Ky.; daughter,  Kate (Eric) Basti  of Columbus, Ohio; sister,  Dee Ann (Mac) Sanders  of McDonough, Ga.; and grandchildren,  Shelby and  Connor Lockman  and  Jane Basti.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Kent lived his entire life in the Shelbyville area, graduating from Shelbyville High School in 1968 and from Indiana University Purdue University, Indianapolis in 1976 and receiving his master's degree from Indiana University in 1981.
He began teaching at Coulston Elementary in 1976 as Shelbyville Central Schools' first male first-grade teacher and finished his career 35 years later, retiring in 2011 as a first-grade teacher at Hendricks Elementary.
Over the years, Kent entertained area audiences as an actor, folksinger, storyteller and versatile musician, most recently as a member of Dishpan Pie and Cobbler Gobblers. Southern Appalachia and the stringband music of the mountains was very dear to him, and he tended to teach audiences as he played for them.
Kent was well-loved and lots of fun.
