Mrs. Cleta M. (Ford) Markland, 89, of Shelbyville, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2014, with her devoted son and brother by her side at Morristown Manor in Morristown. She entered this life on Apr. 19, 1925, in Switzerland County, the daughter of the late Dilver Eastman and Bessie Ann (Bennett) Ford. Cleta was united in marriage on Oct. 7, 1944, in Vevay, to the late Wilbur N. Markland, and to this union arrived a son, Terry, to bless their home. She was a 1943 graduate of Patriot High School.
Cleta helped her husband operate the Markland Garage in East Enterprise, where she served as bookkeeper for nearly 20 years. Cleta and her late husband, Wilbur, held the oldest creamery license in the state of Indiana, where they operated milk routes hauling milk to plants in Columbus, Osgood, Cincinnati, Lawrenceburg, Salem and Elnora. In 1996, Cleta moved to Shelbyville to be near her son.
Survivors include son, Terry J. Markland of Shelbyville; brother, Eddie Ford and wife, Barbara, of Madison; sister, Thelma Robinson of Crystal River, Florida; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Harold Ford; and sisters, Alfredia Ford, Alberta Reed and Jeannie Crawford.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, 2014, at Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry St., Vevay, IN 47043. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, 2014, at the funeral home. Interment will be at Vevay Cemetery in Vevay.

Mrs. Cleta M. (Ford) Markland, age 89, of Shelbyville, Indiana, formerly of East Enterprise, Indiana, entered this life on April 19, 1925, on Bethel Ridge in Switzerland County, Indiana, the loving daughter of the late, Dilver Eastman & Bessie Ann (Bennett) Ford. She was raised in Switzerland County, Indiana & was a 1943 graduate of Patriot High School. Cleta was united in marriage on October 7, 1944, in Vevay, Indiana, to the late Wilbur N. Markland & to this union arrived a son, Terry to bless their home & make it complete. Cleta & Wilbur shared 51 years of marriage together until he passed away on March 15, 1995. Cleta helped her husband operate the Markland Garage in East Enterprise, Indiana, where she served as Bookkeeper, for nearly 20 years. Cleta & her late husband, Wilbur held the oldest creamery license in the state of Indiana, where they operated milk routes hauling milk to plants at Columbus, Osgood, Cincinnati, Lawrenceburg, Salem & Elnora. Cleta & Wilbur were very proud of their son when he received his degree in education from Hanover College in Hanover, Indiana. The values that Cleta instilled in Terry have been passed on to the many students that he has taught over his career in education. The family enjoyed taking a number of trips to Florida to visit relatives. Cleta enjoyed socializing with family & friends & especially enjoyed entertaining the East Enterprise Home Economics Club in East Enterprise, Indiana, where she was always a gracious host. Cleta resided most of her life in the Switzerland County & the East Enterprise Community, until her husband passed away. In 1996, Cleta moved to Shelbyville to be near her son, Terry. Cleta often made several trips back to the family farm in East Enterprise, Indiana, where she enjoyed visiting with her neighbors & lifelong friends. She was a Board Member & past President under Walter Rieman when he was Director of the Switzerland County Welfare Department, for several years. She attended the East Enterprise United Methodist Church in East Enterprise, Indiana, where she was active with the youth group. She was a wonderful homemaker & she will be remembered for her love of cooking, canning & gardening. She was a devoted wife, mother, sister & aunt. Everything possible was done to help Cleta, but medical science cannot always make us well. The past several years, Terry was faithful day after day either going to the hospital or nursing home to attend to her every need. Cleta quietly slipped away on Tuesday, October 28, 2014, at 1:30 pm, with her devoted son & brother by her side at the Morristown Manor in Morristown, Indiana. Gone but not forgotten, in our hearts the memories dwell, and truly we will miss you, more than words can ever tell.
Cleta will be missed by her loving son: Terry J. Markland of Shelbyville, IN; her loving brother: Eddie Ford & his wife: Barbara of Madison, IN; her loving sister: Thelma Robinson of Crystal River, FL & her several nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents: Dilver Eastman & Bessie Ann (Bennett) Ford; her loving husband: Wilbur N. Markland, died March 15, 1995; her brother: Harold Ford, her sisters: Alfredia Ford, Alberta Reed & Jeannie Crawford.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, November 1, 2014, at 11:00 am, by Bro. Bob Hicks & Rev. Rob Barlow, at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana 47043. Interment will follow in the Vevay Cemetery, Vevay, Indiana. Friends may call 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm, Friday, October 31, 2014, at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana 47043. Memorial contributions may be made to American Diabetes Association. Cards are available at the funeral home.

FORMER FAIRLAND RESIDENT
DIES AT HOME IN MINNESOTA

Mrs. Lizzie Markland, of Fairland, of the death of her brother-in-law, G.
S. Markland, of International Falls, Minnesota. Mr. Markland, who was a former resident of Fairland, died Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at a hospital in Minneapolis, following a major operation.
Mr. Markland was fifty-six years of age.
He had lived in Minnesota for the past twenty years, but will be remembered by many county residents.
Funeral services and burial will take place in Emmettsburg, Iowa.
Survivors with the Fairland resident are the widow, one son, one sister and several nieces and nephews.

George Markland, son of the late George W. and Sarah Markland, was born June 24, 1884, and departed this life at a Minneapolis hospital in Minnesota, February 15, 1941, aged 56 years, five months and 20 days.
He was reared in Fairland and was a resident of that community many years. He became a member of the Fairland Christian church early in life. He was also affiliated with the Masonic lodge of Fairland.
About twenty years ago he accepted an appointment by the government as an immigration officer at International Falls, Minnesota, which office he held at the time of his death.
He was of a jolly disposition, easily made friends and retained them. His son,
John, preceded him in death eight years ago. His surviving relatives are the widow, the former
Miss Luxine Hann, of Emmetsburg, Iowa; a son Bert, age 17 years, a sister,
Mrs. Lida Bishop, of Indianapolis; a niece, Mrs. Mabel Fisher, near London; two nephews,
Clyde Hardin, of Indianapolis, and Carl Hardin, of Nebraska; a sister-in-law,
Mrs. Lizzie Markland, of Fairland.

JOHN MARKLAND KILLED INSTANTLY IN ACCIDENT

John Markland, 26, of
Indianapolis, a resident of Fairland until just recently, was killed
instantly about nine o’clock Sunday night when he lost control of
the automobile which he was driving as the car left the cement
pavement at the edge of Acton and crashed into a utility pole. His
wife suffered severe bruises to her legs, while Mr. and Mrs. Rolland
Bogeman, of Indianapolis, other occupants of the car, were
uninjured. |
Mr. Markland, who
sustained a broken neck and crushed chest, was dead when Dr. Boone, of Acton, in
front of whose home the accident occurred, reached the scene of the wreck. The young people were driving towards Acton and the car had just left
the pavement for the rougher dirt road when the fatal mishap
occurred.
The young man was the son of
Mr. and
Mrs. Jessie Purcell, *[George S. and Jessie Ensminger
Markland] of Fairland, and had spent most of his
life in that community. He was a graduate of the Fairland high
school where he was a prominent member of the basketball team. Mr.
Markland was a brick mason by trade. He and his wife had just
recently moved to Indianapolis. Besides the mother and widow, who
was Miss Katherine German, of Fairland, before her marriage,
the father, George Markland, of Three Rivers, Minnesota,
survives. The deceased was a member of the Fairland church.
After an investigation of the accident
by the coroner, the body was brought to the Charles M. Ewing funeral
establishment here where it was prepared for burial. The body was to
be taken to the home, 1945 Emerson Avenue, Indianapolis, at six
o’clock this evening, where funeral services will be held at 2:30
o’clock Wednesday afternoon, Dr. L. O. Richmond, pastor of the
First Presbyterian church here, will officiate. The body will be
taken to the Flanner and Buchanan funeral home for cremation.

Well Known Fairland Man Is Victim Of Heart Attack
While At Farm Monday

Elbert S. Markland, well known Fairland business man, age 58 years, died suddenly at three o'clock Monday afternoon at his farm, west of Shelbyville, where he was conferring with
Mr. and Mts. Clarence Weaver, tenants, about some work to be done.
County Coroner Thomas Cartmel, who was called to investigate, reported that a heart attack was the cause of death.
Mr. Markland was born in Fairland September 10, 1874, the son of
George and Sarah Ricketts Markland. All of his life had been spent in that community and for the past twenty-eight years he has served as manager of the Fairland Lumber Company.
His marriage to Lizzie Wilson took place September 17, 1896.
There were no children.
Besides the widow, the deceased leaves one brother,
George Markland Jr., of International Falls, Minnesota, and a sister, Mrs. Isaac [Elva L.]
Bishop, of Indianapolis.
Mr. Markland was a member of the Fairland Christian church, the Sugar Creek lodge of Masons and the Eagles lodge.
He was also a thirty-second degree Mason.
Funeral services will be held at the home at 10:30 o'clock Thursday morning.
Burial will be in the Fairland cemetery in charge of Charles M. Ewing. Friends are asked to omit flowers.

George W. Markland, an aged and highly respected citizen,
died at his home in Fairland on Friday evening, at four o'clock, after a several month's illness, due to a
complication of diseases. He was 80 years, seven months, and twenty days of age. Mr. Markland
was born in Bartholomew county on March 7, 1842. When his country called, he enlisted in and served
two years and eleven months in the Seventh Indiana regiment of Company D., during the Civil War.
On December 3, 1864 he was united in marriage to iss Sarah
Ricketts, and to this union were born six children, three of whom are living. They are
Miss Isaac Bishop, of Indianapolis; Elbert Markland, of Fairland and Enid
, of Oklahoma, who with the widow survive. Also four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren,
two brothers, the Rev. W. T. Markland, of Aurora, Ind.,; Caleb Markland, of Clarksburg,
Ind., and one sister, Mrs. Lucretia Tanner, of Adams. Mr. Markland was a charter
member of the Christian church at Fairland and had been a very devoted and active worker in the church.
He was also a member of Dumont Post, G.A.R., of this city and the Red Men's lodge at Fairland.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Fairland Chrsitian church, the
hour to be announced later. Interment will be made in the Fairland cemetery, Charles M. Ewing in
charge.
