Joan McGrew, 64

          Joan McGrew,  64, of Greenwood, passed away peacefully Monday, July 14, 2014, at Kindred Transitional Care and Rehab after a 33-year battle with multiple sclerosis.  Joan was born July 11, 1951 in Shelbyville, the daughter of  Francis V. and  Margaret (Burns) McGrew.  Joan had lived in Greenwood for approximately three years.  She previously resided in Waldron and Greensburg.  Joan was a 1969 graduate of Waldron High School and she worked as a secretary for Tax Services before retiring in 1992.  She was a member of Geneva United Methodist Church.
          Joan is survived by her daughter,  Kendra (Ryan) Arthur Wilson  of Greenwood; sister,  Carol McGrew  of San Antonio, Texas; brother,  David (Jo) McGrew of Oklahoma, and her three grandchildren,  Julie,  Sarah Kate  and  Justin.  She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother,  Charles McGrew.
          Funerals services begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 19, at Glenn E. George and Son Funeral Home, Shelbyville, Rev. David Humphrey officiating.  Visitation will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 18, at the funeral home.  Burial follows in Milford Cemetery in Decatur County.  Memorial donations may be made to the National MS Society in care of the funeral home.

          Billy  was born on October 26, 1912,* in Connersville, IN, died at home on March 2, 2010.  Billy joined the Army at age 18, after serving four years, he attended Purdue University majoring in Aeronautical Engineering, he graduated with honors and then moved to San Diego.  He worked for Convair/ General Dynamics for 28 years and retired on August 19, 1990.
          Survived by brother  Michael McGrew  in Muncie, IN, sister  Joyce Bohne  in Rockville, CT, and many cousins also residing in Indiana and Louisville, KY.   He will be remembered as a dedicated employee, fantastic sports enthusiast, confident, loyal friend, led a modest life by choice and extremely generous to close friends and family.  He will be missed by many.  Funeral Services will be held at El Camino Memorial, 5600 Carroll Canyon Rd., San Diego 92121 on Saturday, March 13th, at 2 p.m. with viewing at 1 p.m.

          L. Edward McGrew,  86, of Shelbyville, died Sunday, Feb. 23, 2003, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.  Born Oct. 21, 1916, in Shelby County, he was the son of  Leander and  Nancy E. (Price) McGrew.  He married  Avis Sanders  on July 26, 1939, and she preceded him in death on Feb. 9, 1991.
          Survivors include one son,  Stephen (Jo) McGrew  of Seymour; four sisters,  Mrs. Tom (Doris) Winterrowd,  Mary McMichael  and  Evelyn Baxter,  all of Shelbyville, and  Mrs. Norman (Louise) Mullen  of Fairland; and four grandchildren,  Jay McGrew and  Chris McGrew,  both of Indianapolis,  Mindy McGrew  of Louisville, Ky., and  Mrs. Kirk (Ellen) Bos  of Michigan City.  He also was preceded in death by four brothers,  Delbert McGrew,  Francis "Skeet" McGrew,  Harvey McGrew  and  John McGrew,  and three sisters,  Susie Shirley,  Opal Bohannon  and  Delta May McGrew.
          Mr. McGrew was a lifelong Shelbyville resident.  He was a plant manager at KCL Corp. for 34 years, retiring in 1982.  Mr. McGrew graduated in 1935 from Waldron High School.  He was a member of First Baptist Church, where he formerly served as deacon, trustee and Sunday school teacher.  He was a former member of Lions Club.
          Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Carmony-Ewing Harrison Street Funeral Home, 819 S. Harrison St.  Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Dan McCollough officiating.  Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, 27 W. Broadway St., Shelbyville, IN 46176, or Ruth Lilly Hospice of Clarian Methodist Health Foundation, 1800 N. Capitol Ave., Post Office Box 7168, Indianapolis, IN 46207-7168.

          Margaret K. McGrew, 84, of Shelby County, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001 at Waldron Health Care Home in Waldron.  Born July 5, 1917, in Hope, she was the daughter of  George C. and  Della (Danner) Burnes.  She married  Francis "Skeet" McGrew  on Dec. 9, 1934. He preceded her in death on April 9, 1982.
          Survivors include two daughters,  Carol Sue Cepeda  of San Antonio, Texas, and  Joan F. Clapp  of Shelbyville; one son,  David A. McGrew  of Minco, Okla.; four sisters,  Evelyn Weaver  and  Helen Weaver,  both of Shelbyville,  Naomi Heuer  of Waldron and  Nina Robertson  of Hope; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
          She was preceded in death by one son,  Charles R. McGrew,  one sister,  Ruby Thayer  and one granddaughter.  Mrs. McGrew had been a cook at Waldron and Noble Township schools.  She was a member of Geneva United Methodist Church.
          Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Norman Funeral Home, 604 Main St. in Hope with the Rev. Doug Finney officiating. Burial will be in Milford Cemetery in Decatur County.  Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.  Memorial contributions may be made to Geneva United Methodist Church in care of Norman Funeral Home, 604 Main St., Hope, IN 47246.

          Charles R. McGrew, 61, Versailles, who has family in Shelbyville, died Friday at Vencor South Hospital, Greenwood.  Born on June 26, 1936, in Indianapolis, he was the son of  F. V. "Skeet" and  Margaret (Burnes) McGrew.  His mother survives in Shelbyville.  Mr. McGrew was a 1955 graduate of Waldron High School. He was an electrician for the L.E. Meyers Co. and a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers No. 1398.
          Survivors include a son,  Delbert "Bo" McGrew,  Phoenix, Ariz.; two daughters,  Vicki Rose,  Phoenix, and  Lori Konkol,  Tucson; two sisters,  Joan Clapp,  Shelbyville, and  Carol Sue Cepeda,  San Antonio, Texas; one brother,  David McGrew,  Oklahoma City, Okla.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
          Friends may call today from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Bovard Funeral Home, Versailles.  Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Seth Adamson officiating.  Burial will be in Milford Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to the donor's favorite charity.

          Avis McGrew,  78, West South Street, died this morning at Major Hospital.  Born Dec. 5, 1912, in Decatur County, she was a daughter of  William and  Clara (Vincent) Sanders.  Her husband,  Edward McGrew,  whom she married July 26, 1939, survives.
          Mrs. McGrew was formerly employed with Jester's Department Store, Shelbyville, and was a homemaker.  She was a member of the Shelby County Historical Society and was formerly a member of the Current Topic Club.  She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Shelbyville, where she belonged to the Bethany class.  Other survivors include a son,  Stephen McGrew,  Seymour, four grandchildren, and a sister,  Mrs. Martha Lux,  Waldron.  Preceding her in death were four sisters and three brothers.
          Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Carmony-Ewing Harrison Street Funeral Home, with the Rev. Robin D. Perkins officiating.  Friends may call at the funeral home from 4-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.  Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery.

          John Manford McGrew,  78, Shelbyville, died at 6:30 a.m. Friday at St. Francis Hospital, Beech Grove.  Born May 19, 1912, in Bartholomew County, he was the son of  Leander and  Nancy E. (Price) McGrew.  On April 25, 1944, in Warrenton, Va., he married  G. Alison Stevens,  who survives.  Mr. McGrew moved to Shelbyville five years ago from Belmont, N.H.  He was a self-employed cabinetmaker, retiring in 1984.  He was a World War II Army veteran and a member of The Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints.  He was a clerk in the church's Shelbyville council.
          Other survivors are: three children,  Billy Lee McGrew,  San Diego, Calif.,  Mrs. Richard (Joyce Alison) Bohne,  Rockville, Conn., and  John Michael McGrew,  Muncie; 18 grandchildren; a brother,  Ed McGrew,  Shelbyville; four sisters,  Mrs. Floyd (Mary) McMichael,  Mrs. Tom (Doris) Winterrowd  and  Evelyn Baxter,  all of Shelbyville, and  Mrs. Norman (Louise) Mullin,  Fairland.  Three brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.
          Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at The Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints, with Bishop Robert Craig officiating.  Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.  Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the Carmony-Ewing Harrison Street Funeral Home, 819 S. Harrison St.

          Francis "Skeet" McGrew,  68, Geneva, died at 1 p.m. Friday at W.S. Major Hospital. He had been in failing health several years.  Services will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Norman Funeral Home, Hope, with the Revs. Douglas Finney and Dallas Collier officiating. Burial will be in Milford Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 3 p.m. until 9 p.m. Sunday.
          McGrew was a retired farmer and a former employee of the Shelby County Highway Department.  He was a member of the Geneva United Methodist Church.  Born Nov. 8, 1913, in Jennings County, Mr. McGrew was a son of  Lee and  Nancy (Price) McGrew.  In 1934 he married  Margaret Burnes,  who survives.
          Also surviving are four children,  Charles McGrew,  Versailles,  Mrs. R. D. (Carol Sue) Cepeda,  San Antonio, Texas,  T. Sgt. David McGrew,  Wichita, Kan., and  Mrs. Joan Arthur,  Shelbyville; 17 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.  Seven brothers and sisters also survive.  They are:  Edward McGrew,  Mary McMichael  and  Evelyn Baxter,  all of Shelbyville;  John McGrew,  New Hampshire;  Sue Shirley  and  Doris Winterrowd,  both of Indianapolis; and  Louise Mullen,  Fairland.

          Mrs. Nancy E. McGrew,  76, 505 S. Miller St., died at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at Major Hospital following surgery.   Mrs. McGrew was born April 17, 1888, in Green [sic--Greene] County, Ind., and had resided here for the last 50 years.  She was the daughter of  Zachariah and  Cynthia (Britton) Price.  On Jan. 10, 1908, she was married to  Leander McGrew  who died March 29, 1936.
          Survivors include nine children.  Mrs. Opal Bohannon,  Edward McGrew  and  Mrs. Evelyn Baxter,  all of this city,  John McGrew  of Ashland, N. H.,  Francis McGrew  of St. Paul R. R. 1,  Mrs. Thurston Shirley  of Indianapolis,  Mrs. Floyd McMichael  of Columbus,  Mrs. Tom Winterrowd  of Boonville, and  Mrs. Norman Mullen  of Fairland; a sister,  Mrs. Della Rumple  of Carthage; two brothers,  William Price  of R. R. 2 and  Asbury Price  of Connersville; 25 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.  Three children preceded in death.
          Mrs. McGrew was a member of the West Street Methodist Church and American War Mothers.  Rev. Jerome Hyde will conduct services at 1:00 p.m. Friday at Ewing Mortuary.   Burial will be in the Milford Cemetery, south of St. Paul.  Friends may call at the mortuary after 4:00.

          Funeral services for  Harvey G. McGrew, 31, United States Navy, killed in Hawaii on Aug. 16, 1943, will be conducted Friday afternoon at the Clifty cemetery at Milford.
          His mother,  Mrs, Nancy McGrew, of 505 South Miller street, has been notified that her son's body will arrive here on the New York Central Lines at 2:20 p.m. Friday.  The graveside rites will be conducted by Rev. A. J. Spaulding, of Indianapolis.  The Ewing mortuary will be in charge of arrangements.
          Mr. McGrew was killed while on duty at the Oahu Airport in Hawaii.  He was riding in an ambulance which was struck by a falling plane.  Burial was made at the Pearl Harbor Cemetery.
          He was born in Decatur county Sept. 1, 1909, the son of  Leander R. and  Nancy McGrew.  His father died March 29, 1936.  He was a member of the Bethel Baptist church.
          Surviving, besides his mother, are three brothers,  John McGrew, of New Hampshire,  Francis, of Indianapolis,  Edward, of Shelbyville; and six sisters,  Mrs. Opal Bohannon, of Indianapolis,  Mrs. Sue Shirley, of Colorado,  Mrs. Mary McMichael, of this city,  Mrs. Doris Winterrowd, of Flat Rock;  Mrs. Evelyn Baxter, of St. Paul, and  Miss Louise McGrew, at home.
          One of his brothers, Pfc. Delbert C. McGrew, was also a casualty of World War II.  He was killed on the Island of Luzon April 18, 1945.

          The announcement of victory in Europe and the sound of whistles blowing in celebration of V-E day fell with hollow tones upon the hearts of at least one family today.
          Word that a second son, Pfc. Delbert R. McGrew,had given his life in the war with the Japanese was received by  Mrs. Nancy McGrew,  of 158 east Pennsylvania St., Monday afternoon.  Another son,  Harvey McGrew,  a navy pharmacist mate second class, was killed on August 18, 1943, in a plane crash in Hawaii.

          No details were contained in the War Department telegram which reached the McGrew home Monday other than that Pvt. McGrew was killed in action on Luzon in the PHilippines on April 18.  His last letter to his family was written on April 16 and stated that he was in a rest area.
          Pvt. McGrew entered service in February, 1943, and following training at Camp Polk, La., and Camp Mackall, N.C., was sent overseas in May, 1944.  He served with the 11th Airborne Division and participated in the New Guinea and Leyte campaigns before moving to Luzon.
Native of County.
          The young man was born in Shelby county on May 4, 1923, the son of  Leander R.  and  Nancy Price McGrew.  His father died nine years ago.  He attended the Noble township school and was a member of the Shelbyville Eagles lodge.
          Surviving with the mother are six sisters and four brothers,  Mrs. Opal Bohannon,  of near Indianapolis;  Mrs. Thruston Shirley,  of Columbus;  Mary,  Evelyn,  Doris  and Louise,  at home;  T/4[?] John McGrew,  serving in France;  Edward,  of this city, and  Francis,  of near Indianapolis.
          Pvt. McGrew is the 61st [number is hard to read] Shelby county man to give his life in World War II.

          Leander R. McGrew  died at his home in Washington township near Geneva at 7 a.m. Sunday following a paralytic stroke a week ago.  At the time of his death the deceased was fifty-four year [sic--years] old.
          He was the son of  Mr. and  Mrs. Peter McGrew  and was born April 29, 1881 in Kentucky.  On Jan. 10, 1908 he was married to  Miss Nancy E. Price  and to this union twelve children were born, eleven of which survive.  They are  Mrs. Opal Bohannon  of Indianapolis,  Harvey McGrew  of Shelbyville,  John  of Louisville, Ky.;  Francis and  Edward  of Noble township; and  Susie,  Mary,  Delbert,  Doris,  Evelyn and  Louise McGrew,  all at home.
          Besides the widow and children he leaves three grandchildren, two brothers;  Henry and  Isaac  of Louisville, Ky., and two sisters,  Mrs. Janie Deane  and  Mrs. Lulu Denton  of Louisville, Ky.           The deceased was a member of the Bethel Baptist church, where the funeral will be held Tuesday, March 31, at 2 o'clock with the Rev. John Shirley of near Rugby, Ind., officiating. Internment [sic--interment] will be in the Milford cemetery.
