Donald F. Newby, 64, 232-1/2 W. Broadway, well known former owner and operator of Newby's Standard Service Station at Harrison and Mechanic Sts., died at 8:55 p.m. Sunday at his home. Death was attributed to a heart condition. Mr. Newby was born Jan. 20, 1900, in Indianapolis, a son of Walter and Ida Belle (Bennett) Newby. He married Margaret M. Connors on Oct. 2, 1920, and she survives with a daughter, Mrs. Maurice Hart of this city, and two grandsons.
My Newby was employed by Standard Oil of Indiana for 22 yeras. He moved to Shelbyville in 1941 and from 1945 to 1947, he was part owner and operator of the Beagle, Newby and Brown Service Station on N. Harrison Street. He retired in 1959 because of ill health after operating the Newby's Station from 1947 to 1959.
A veteran of War I, Mr. Newby was decorated with the Silver Star and the Purple Heart. He was a member of the American Legion Victory Post 70 and Eagles and Elks Lodges.
Services will be held at the Carmony Funeral Home at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday with Rev. Bernard Barger officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery with graveside military rites by the Legion. Friends may call at the mortuary after 1:00 p.m. Tuesday.
