OBITUARY
----------
Grandma Phelps was one of the first settlers of Shelby county.  She was born in the year 1802 in the State of New York, was married to Alfred Phelps on the 29th day of March, 1823, and settled on the farm on which she died, in the spring of 1824.  She was 77 years old almost and would have been married 57 years had she lived until the 29th of March next.  She was the mother of seven children who all married and had families. The coffin that contained her remains was the first that her husband ever bought, and the second one ever in their house.  Mrs. Phelps died on the 1st of August, at 6:10 o'clock, mourned by a host of friends, as everybody knew her and only knew to love her.  She was almost as a mother to all who knew her--always having a kind word for all.  She was attacked with cholera morbus on Saturday night and died on the following Friday evening.  Her funeral was preached by Reverend Jacob Norton, which was her request some days before she died.  She was followed to the grave by a large congregation, and buried in the Robert's Chapel Cemetery.  She had been a member of the Methodist Church for many years.  She had lived fifty-five years in Jackson township, Shelby county, and was buried within half a mile of where she had lived so long.
