Mary Janet (Shanklin) Rankins, 86, Houston, Texas, formerly of Hemlock, went to be with her Lord at 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, 2012, at Ledged Oak Healthcare, Houston, Texas. Mary was born June 18, 1925, in Linton to William and Jeanetta Shanklin. She was married to Frank Rankins, who preceded her in death on Dec. 7, 2010. She was a woman of great faith. She enjoyed attending Bible studies. She also enjoyed crochet as a pastime.
Surviving are three sons and two daughters, Richard (Jureda) Rankins, Kokomo, James (Sharon) Rankins, Chattanooga, Tenn., Michael (Janet) Rankins, Versailles, Mo., Pamela (Gary) Blake, Katy, Texas, and Rebekah (Doug) Hartley, Tallahassee, Fla.; a daughter-in-law, Edna (Cranston) Rankins, Kokomo; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Juanita Fulkerson, Linton, and Nell Struckman, Denver. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frank; son, Cranston; granddaughter, Abbigail Rankins; grandson, Caleb Rankins; sisters, Cora Carter, Clara Leichen and Jo Willowby; and brothers, Abraham Shanklin, Richard Shanklin, Maurice Shanklin and William Shanklin.
Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, March 18, at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home in Houston, Texas. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, March 19 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Houston National Cemetery in Houston. Memorial donations may be made to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Mary Janet (Shanklin) Rankins went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, March 6, 2012 at the age of 86. She went quietly in her sleep after a struggle with Congestive Heart Failure. Mary was the daughter of William and Jeanetta (Whitworth) Shanklin. She graduated from Linton-Stockton High School in June 1943. Later that same year she met Frank Rankins and they were married Nov. 8, 1943. After Frank returned from the South Pacific in 1946 they moved to Kokomo, Ind., where they lived for 55 years before moving to Katy, Texas, where she was a member of The Church at Katy.
Mary is preceded in death by Frank Rankins, her husband of 68 years, and her son Cranston. She is survived by her children: Richard and Jureda Rankins of Kokomo; James and Sharon Rankins of Chattanooga, Tenn.; Pamela and Gary Blake of Katy, Texas; Michael and Janet Rankins of Versailles, Mo.; Rebekah and Doug Hartley of Tallahassee, Fla., and daughter-in-law Edna Rankins of Greentown, Ind. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, sisters Juanita Fulkerson of Linton, and Nell Struckman of Denver, Ind., and various nieces and nephews.
The viewing will be Sunday, March 18 from 5-8 p.m. Funeral service will be at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home Chapel in Houston, Texas on March 19 at 10 a.m. The funeral will be followed by burial services beginning at 1 p.m. in the Houston National Cemetery where she will be placed at rest with her beloved husband. The family would like to request,in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Susan G. Komen for the Cure in Mary's name to honor her victory over breast cancer 26 years ago.
