William Ruggels, 92, Pioneer Farmer, Dies

William N. Ruggels,* 92, a farmer in this community more than 50 years, died at 1:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon at his home on Columbus route one. Although in failing health the past year, he had been seriously ill only the last two weeks.
Born Dec. 7, 1863, in Shelby County, Ind., Mr. Ruggels was the son of Amos and Nancy Waggoner Ruggels. He grew to manhood there and married Nancy Elizabeth Peck Feb. 5, 1888. They moved to Kansas in 1901 settling southwest of Columbus. They had lived on their present farm 55 years.
Despite their advanced age, Mr. and Mrs. Ruggels were able to live alone until recently and care for each other with the aid of their children who made daily visits to the home.
Mr. Ruggels was a member of the Sherwin Christian church. Two sons, Clyde and Edward, have preceded him in death.
Surviving are the widow, who is 88 years old; one son, Frank Ruggels of Columbus route one; one daughter, Mrs. Claude Boggs of Columbus; five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon in the Ruhland funeral home. The Rev. Miles Cook of Yates Center will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Ernest Jones. Interment will be in Park cemetery.
Singers will be Mrs. Ernest Jones and Mrs. Ralph Souder.
Honorary casket bearers will be Joe Hubbard, Ernest LaMaster, Charley Hanks, Lloyd Spriggs, Virgil Martin, Lyle Souder, Ralph Souder, John Crain and Paul Draeger.
Casket bearers will be Jack Gassaway, Fred Hardin, Homer Wilcox, Cliff Crain, Paul Draeger and Walt Tinney.

Rites For L.S. Ruggels At Beverly, Monday

Funeral services for L.S. Ruggels, who died Friday morning at Asbury hospital, in Salina, were held at 2:30 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Beverly Methodist church with the Rev. B.A. Scott officiating. Interment was made in the Beverly cemetery.
An auctioneer for 60 years, Mr. Ruggels had a wide acquaintance throughout central Kansas and was always in demand to cry farm sales and other auctions. He resided at Beverly for many years, but since 1914 had lived in Salina part of the time.
Leroy Samuel Ruggels was born September 20, 1861, at Selby county, Indiana, being more than 86 years of age at the time of his death. He came to Kansas in 1885 and lived in Lincoln, Ottawa, and Saline counties. His wife, Mrs. Anna M. Ruggels, died in 1938.
He is survived by three sons and three daughters: A. E. Ruggels, Salina; E. A. Ruggels, Natoma; Albert Ruggels, Beverly; Mrs. Mabel Haggard, San Bernardino, Calif.; Mrs. Grace Hobson, North Hollywood, Calif.; and Mrs. Elizabeth Hays, Clyde, Kansas. There are eight grandchildren and one great grandchild, two sisters Mrs. Mary Cassel, Salina and Mrs. Rosa Green, Tescott, and one brother, William N. Ruggels, Columbus, Kansas.

JONATHAN EVERETT RUGGELS

Jonathan Everett Ruggels, was born in Shelby county, Indiana, on January 7, 1857 and departed this life on July 3, 1930, aged 73 years, five months and twenty five days.
He was united in marriage to Katherine Halterman, August 7, 1879, and to this union seven children were born. His first wife died in 1899; 19 years later he was married to Mrs. May Bectel of Toledo, Ohio. He had been a resident of Ottawa county for thirty five years, but was living in Kansas City, Mo., at the time of his death.
He was a true patriot and a strong advocate of civil and moral reform. His home life was a model. A good man, a faithful husband, a never failing friend and a man who by his honest dealing was known as "Old Honest John."
He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, now residing at Grand Rapids, Michigan, and who was unable to attend the funeral because of failing health; five children, Mrs. Paul Gabelman of Salina, Mrs. W.C. Kelsey of Bennington, Mrs. D.M. Heikes of this city, A. L. Ruggels of Russel and Mrs. J. F. Snyder of Huron South Dak.; two brothers, L. S. of Beverly and W. N. of Columbus; three sisters, Mary Cassell of Salina, Amanda Van Meter of Greenfield, Illinois and Rosa Green of Tescott; and twenty-eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
The funeral services were held at the L.B. Smith Funeral Home in this city, Saturday afternoon at 2:00, conducted by Rev. Alexander Bryans of the M.E. church. Interment was in the Franklin cemetery south of Tescott.

Tescott -- Mrs. Ruggles, wife of John Ruggles, died Jan. 26th with pneumonia following the measles. She leaves a husband and seven children who mourn her loss. They have the sympathy of all.

Tescott -- Mrs. John Ruggles departed this life Jan. 26th, after about one week's suffering from measles and pneumonia. Her funeral took place Friday at 10 a.m., from the residence of the deceased, Rev. Lorenze officiating. She leaves a family of seven children, six girls and one son, and husband to mourn the loss of a kind mother and Christian friend. Her remains were laid to rest in Franklin cemetery. The bereaved family has the sympathy of the community in the time of their sad trouble.

Note from Angel: Catherine (Halterman) Ruggles was the daughter of Oliver & Emily (?) Halterman. She married Jonathan Everett Ruggles on August 7, 1879, in Rush County, Indiana.
