E. Irene Theobald, 96, former Shelbyville resident, died Jan. 1, 2003, at Franklin United Methodist Home in Franklin.
Born April 13, 1906, in Shelbyville, d/o Charles H. and Sophia L. (Haehl) Theobald.
Survivors include three nieces, Mrs. James (Margaret) Sponsler of Cranberry Township, Pa., Martha Jones of Noblesville and Frances Smith of Indianapolis; two nephews, Fredrick Theobald of Florida and Charles (Jesse) Stewart of Indianapolis; and several great-nieces and -nephews.
Preceded in death by two brothers, Riley Theobald and Paul Theobald.
Moved to Franklin in 2002.
Office manager for Drs. Garrett, Jackson and Thurston in Indianapolis from the 1930s to 1947; worked part-time for the doctors and cared for her mother from 1947 to 1958; and worked in the Shelbyville High School cafeteria from 1958 until retiring around 1970. After retiring she farmed with her brothers.
Longtime member of Evangelical United Church of Christ, where she was president of the women’s guild several times.

Born July 31, 1935, s/o William and Violet (Willey) Theobald.
Survivors include one brother, Carroll G. Theobald of Shelbyville, and long-time companion and business partner Gary Sampson.
Attended Ohio State University.
United States Army and Army Reserves. 
Worked for Sears in the corporate office in Chicago, providing expertise in photography, catalog layout and design and merchandising. He and Sampson opened N. Theobald Inc. in 1973 at Keystone at the Crossing. Theobald became known in Indianapolis and throughout the world as the “King of Crystal” and as a master merchant of the finest in table top and gift merchandise. N. Theobald Inc. was the recipient of many awards, including the Cartier Dealer Display Award and the Table Top Award in 1989. 
Burial: Union Chapel Cemetery in Indianapolis.

Lived in Shelby and Rush counties his entire life except for 11 winters, which he spent in Florida.
Co-owner and operator of  Kelley Wiring.
Membership included:  Manilla Lions Club, where he was a founding member and past president; Irvington Masonic Lodge No. 666, where he was a 50-year member; Scottish Rite Valley, Indianapolis, where he was a 53-year member; York Rite, Shelbyville; and Order of the Eastern Star No. 316, Morristown.
Graduated from Manilla High School in 1937.
Survivors are:  a son, Larry Theobald, Shelbyville; a daughter, Mrs. Stanley (Barbara) Walton, Union Township; a brother, Edmond Theobald, Union township; a sister, Mary Frances Beyer, Greenfield; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Resident  Dies  at  83

          Mrs. Catherine (Katy) S. Theobald, 83, R.R.6, Shelbyville, died at the Heritage House Convalescent Center at 12:25 p.m. Saturday after an illness of two months.  She had been a patient in Major Hospital before going to the Heritage House last Monday.
          Mrs. Theoblad was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and had lived in Shelby County most of her life.
           Born in Ripley County Oct. 4, 1884, the daughter of  Frank and  Margaret Schuck, she was married to  William E. Theobald in 1903 and he preceded in death.
          Surviving are a son,  Edwin E. Theobald of Indianapolis; a daughter,  Mrs. Gladys Lemasters, at home; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.  Two brothers and one sister preceded in death and a daughter, Mrs. Ray (Frances Louise) Herndon, died July 8.
          Services will be at the St. Joseph Catholic Church Wednesday at 930 a.m., with the Rev. James Arneson officiating.  Burial will be in S. Joseph Cemetery.
          Friends may call at the Ewing Mortuary after 4:00 p.m. Tuesday.  The Rosary will be recited there at 8;30 p.m. Tuesday.

Harry H. Theobald, 69, R.R.6, Shelbyville, a retired farmer, died at 3 a.m. today in Rush Memorial Hospital.
Home was north of Ray's Crossing.  Spent most of his life in the same community in Union Township (Shelby
County).
Born in Union Township on June 5, 1898, s/o  Theodore R. and Elizabeth Hawkins Theobald.
On October 3, 1919, married to Carrie Faye Macy, who survives.
Member of the old Grange Hall Church near Ray's Crossing.
Survivors:  widow; son, Norman G. Theobald, R.R.6, Shelbyville, the auditor of Shelby County; two brothers, Russell T. Theobald, R. R. 6, Shelbyville, a Shelby County commissioner, and  Leo C. Theobald of Shelbyville, and 10 grandchildren.
Two sons, Lowell  and  Joseph, a brother and a sister preceded him in death.

Lowell Theobald, 41, of 352 Cleveland St., Columbus, a native of Union township, drowned early Sunday near Afton, Oklahoma.
Born in Union township June 21, 1920, s/o  Mr. and Mrs. Harry Theobald of Union township.  Had spent his entire life there until moving to Columbus several years ago, where he was engaged in the electrical contracting business.
Married  Dorothy Haehl  April 12, 1941; she survives.
Member of the Zion Evangelical & Reformed Church of Shclby county and attended the E. Columbus Methodist Church. 
Member of the Masonic Lodge of Shelbyville and the Scottish Rite at Indianapolis.
Survivors:  the widow; two children, Marietsa, a student at Indiana University, and  Douglas, at home: his parents;  brother,  Norman G. Theobald, Union township trustee.
Press reports of an investigation of the death by Trooper Robert Hamilton of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol:  left a north-bound bus about 7:30 o'clock Sunday morning near the Afton gate of the Will Rogers turnpike, climbed over the turnpike fence and walked toward a nearby farm pond.  Body recovered from pond short time later.

Resident Near Rays Crossing Dies Suddenly

Joseph (Joe) O. Theobald, 38, prominent resident of the Rays Crossing community, died suddenly of a stroke at his home about 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Spent his entire life in the same house a mile and a half north of Rays Crossing, operated a farm; also was employed at the Shelbyville General Electric plant.
Moving a water trough with his father when fatally stricken.  Had not been in ill health.
Graduate of Manilla High School in 1940,.
Veteran of World War II.  Served three and a half years with the Army's 99th Signal Corps and was a survivor of the Battle of the Bulge.
S/o  Harry and Carrie Faye Macy Theobald,  born July 30, 1922.
Married on May 1, 1943, Doris Ruth Brown of Homer, who survives.
Member of the Little Blue River Baptist Church, where he served as a Sunday School teacher.  Also a deacon and a former trustee of the church.
Survivors:  by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Theobald, near Rays Crossing: four children,  Sharon Jo,  Janet Marie,  Jane Ann  and  Phillip H. Theobald, all at home and two brothers, Lowell Theobald
of Columbus and  Norman G. Theobald, R. R. 1, Shelbyville.

Home was north of Rays Crossing.  Had been at the home of her son for the past month.

          William E. Theobald, 76, former resident of Shelby county and Shelbyville, died at Community Hospital in Indianapolis Saturday at 10:00 p.m.  He had been in failing health for more than a year.  Mr. Theobald's home was 3242 N. Bancroft St., Indianapolis.
          Mr. Theobald was born in Kansas City but resided in this community most of his life until moving to Indianapolis about 1920.  He is survived by two daughters and one son,  Mrs. Ray Herndon of R.R.2,  Mrs. Gladys Lemasters of R.R.6 and  Edwin E. Theobald of Indianapolis.  Also surviving are two sisters,  Mrs. Emma Fisher, of Shelby County, and  Mrs. Lula Davis of this city.
          Funeral services will be held at the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. (DST)  Burial will be in the church cemetery.  Friends may call at the Harry W. Moore Peace Chapel on W. Michigan St., Indianapolis, tonight.

          Ill for the last two years and in a serious condition for a week, Mrs. Susie Theobald, 84-year-old Union township resident, died at the W. S. Major Hospital Sunday morning at 1:45 o'clock.  Death was attributed to complications from a heart condition.
          A lifelong resident of Shelby county and a member of the Rays Crossing Christian Union Church, Mrs. Theobald was born in Shelby county on August 11, 1867.  She was the daughter of  Wesley  and  Amanda (Stewart) Holbrook.  She was married to  Julius E. Theobald  on March 24, 1889, and he preceded her in death in 1944.
          She is survived by six children,  Leola B.  and  Fay Theobald  at home;  Mrs. Wilbur L. Good  and  Willard A. Theobald  of Union township;  Wallace Theobald, Addison township, and  Mrs. Edgar Lingenfelter  of near Fountaintown.  Also surviving are 14 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; two brother, Alva Holbrook of Marietta and  Joseph  of Danville, and one sister, Mrs. Fred Fisher  of Flat Rock.
          Funeral rites will be conducted Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Carmony Funeral Home on W. Broadway.  Rev. W. B. Jenkins will officiate.  Burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery.  Friends may call at the funeral home.

COUNTY  NATIVE  DIES  AT  HOME

          The Rev. T[heodore] R. Theobald, 75, died at his home in Union township at 4:20 p.m. Wednesday after a long illness.
          Born in Union township July 9, 1867, he was the son of  George Michael  and  Catherine Haehl Theobald.  He was married to  Elizabeth Hawkins  March 2, 1890.  They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1940.
          The Rev. Mr. Theobald was a minister of the Pilgrim Holiness Church, his membership being in the Shelbyville church.  Formerly he was a farmer.  For five years he was secretary-treasurer of the local office of the Federal Land Bank of Louisville, Kentucky.
          Surviving are the widow, three sons,  Leo,  Harry  and  Russell,  all of Union township; one daughter,  Mrs. Carrie Brown,  of Anderson; twelve grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.  Two of his grandsons are in the military service.  He is also survived by two brothers,  George  and  Julius Theobald.
          Funeral services will be conducted at the Rays Crossing C.U. church at 2:00 p.m. Friday, with the Rev. Franklin Schoeff officiating.  Burial will be in the Bennett cemetery in charge of Loren H. Murphy.  The family requests that flowers be omitted.  Friends may call at the home after 2:00 p.m. today.

         Mrs. Rosena Theobold, wife of the late  John Theobold, died at four-thirty o'clock this morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Henry Fisher, three miles south of this city in Shelby township.  Death was caused from a complication of diseases of which she had been suffering for two years.  The deceased was born April 24, 1846 and was 77 years, eleven months and twenty-four days of age.  Mrs. Theobold was the daughter of the late  Henry  and  Rosena Haehl, who came to this country from Germany and settled in Union township.  She was married to Mr. Theobold on September 1867.  To this union eleven children were born, three of whom are deceased.  Those surviving are five sons and three daughters.  They are  Julius  and  Cornelius  of Shelbyville;  Gustave  of Decatur County;  William  of Indianapolis;  Edward  of near near[sic] Geneva;  Mrs. Henry Fisher at whose home she passes away;  Mrs. Adaline Harwood, of Greensburg  and  Mrs. Lulu Davis  of this city.  Also she leaves one brother, George Haehl, of Rays Crossing; a sister, Mrs. Caroline Witz, of near Manilla; twenty-two grand-children and eight great-grandchildren.  She was a member of the Zion Evangelical church in Union township.  Funeral arrangements will be announced Tuesday by Piatt & Murphy, in charge.

          Mrs. Rosena Theobald, widow of  John Theobald, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Henry Fisher, of Shelby township, at 4:30 o'clock this morning, from a complication of diseases with which she had suffered for the past two weeks.
          The body has been brought to the home of her son, Julius Theobald, 119 north Walnut street, and funeral arrangements will be announced later by Piatt and & Murphy, funeral directors.
          Mrs. Theobald was the daughter of  Henry  and  Rosena Haehl, and was born in Union township.  Her parents were natives of Germany.  At the time of death she was 77 years, 11 months and 24 days old.  She was a devoted member of the Union township Evangelical church.
          She is survived by five sons and three daughters.  The sons are  Julius  and  Cornelius Theobald, of this city;  Gustave Theobald, of Decatur county;  William, of Indianapolis;  Edward, of this county, and the daughters are  Mrs. Fisher, at whose home she died;  Mrs. Adeline Harwood, of Greensburg, and  Mrs. Lula Davis, of this city.  She also leaves twenty-two grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, one brother, George Haehl, of Rays Crossing, and one sister, Mrs. Caroline Witz, of Manilla.

          Funeral services for  Robert Lee Theobold,  19 days old, son of  Mr. and Mrs. Russell Theobold,  of Union township, were held this morning at 10 o'clock at the late home, and burial was made in the Wesleyan cemetery in Rush county.  The baby was born Christmas day, but suffered with ill health from birth and his death occurred Saturday evening at 5:00 o'clock.  Surviving are the parents, two brothers,  Russell and  Charles Theobold  and the grandparents,  Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Macy.  Mrs. Hawkins,  a great-grandmother, also survives.  The Rev. Mr. Hester officiated at the funeral and the burial was in charge of Carmony Bros., undertakers.

Jacob Theobald, Well Known And Respected
Union Township Man Died Saturday Morning Of Paralysis

          Jacob Theobald  died at his residence in Union township at five-forty o'clock Saturday morning.  Mr. Theobald had suffered several strokes of paralysis, the last occurring only a short time ago.  The deceased was eighty-two years old and had lived in Shelby county since 1848.  Mr. Theobald was an honest and respected citizen and by his thrift and industry had accumulated a large amount of land in Union township.  Mr. Theobald leaves seven children to mourn his loss -  John,  Peter and  August, and  Mrs. Fred Gahimer,  Mrs. Michael Gahimer,  Mrs. Emma Worland and  Mrs. Clara Hill.  He is also survived by thirty-six grandchildren and twenty-four great grandchildren.  The interment will take place in the German cemetery in Union township and the services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the German church of that township by the Rev. Winters, assisted by the Rev. G. L. Mann.  The cortege will leave the house at one o'clock. D. B. Wilson & Son are the funeral directors in charge.

          William Theobald  died at the residence of his wife's parents,  Mr. and Mrs. William Miller,  of South Sandusky Avenue, Bueyrus, Ohio, at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, 1895, aged twenty five years, two months and twenty-four days.  The remains arrived here on Saturday evening, April 27, on the 7:25 train, and were taken to the residence of his sister,  Mrs. Dr. G. G. Winter,  120 East Pennsylvania street.  The funeral services were held at the German Church in Union township, Rev. G.G. Winter officiating.  Interment in the Germany cemetery. D.B. Wilson & Son, funeral directors.
