TERRE HAUTE -- Helen Irene Torpy, 94, of Terre Haute, passed away Sunday, March 9, 2014, at Union Hospital. She was born Jan. 29, 1920, in Terre Haute, to Joseph Raymond and Vonda (Smith) Miller. She attended Full Gospel Assembly of God. Helen enjoyed taking care of others her entire life. She worked as a caretaker for many years, assisting anyone who was in need of help. In her spare time, Helen enjoyed crocheting and reading. She loved to watch "The Young and the Restless" and Westerns. She spoiled and doted on her little dog, Tinker.
She is survived by her children, Bernice Walker and husband John of Lemon Grove, Calif., Debra Torpy and James W. Torpy, both of Terre Haute; a brother, Roy Miller and companion, Jean Skipo of Terre Haute; a sister, Geneva Adams of Terre Haute; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Darleen Gore; a son, John W. Torpy Jr. ;a brother, Raymond Miller; and a sister, Doris Chapman.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 13, 2014, at Roselawn Funeral Home. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, March 14, 2014. with Pastor Jared Parks officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park. A carry-in dinner for family and friends will follow services at Southside Nazarene Church.

TERRE HAUTE - John Woodrow Torpy Jr., passed away April 30, 2010, in Union Hospital. He was born on July 8, 1945, in Terre Haute, to John and Helen Torpy. John served in the U.S. Air Force and worked as a mechanic for US Air. He was a man of many talents and could accomplish anything he put his mind to. He loved fishing and his dog, Duchess.
He is survived by his mother, Helen Torpy; sisters, Bernice Walker and Debbie McGill; brother, James Torpy; daughters and their spouses, Christi and Joshua Thorpe, Jeana Gron (Patrick Kolp), and Lisa and Paul Sammann; son and spouse, Justin Gron and Samantha O'Connor; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, John Woodrow Torpy Sr.; and a sister, Darlene Gore.
Burial will be Monday at 2 p.m. in the Roselawn Funeral Home, 7500 N. Clinton St. The Roselawn Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.

John Woodrow "Woody" Torpy Sr., 86, of West Terre Haute died at 6:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, in Union Hospital. He retired from the Vigo County Parks Department. He was born Dec. 10, 1917, in West Union, Ill., to Daniel Nathan Torpy and Mary Elizabeth Wallace Torpy.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Torpy; two sons, John Torpy Jr. and James Torpy, both of Terre Haute; two daughters, Bernice Walker and her husband John of San Diego, and Debra McGill and her husband Danny of Terre Haute; four stepsons, Larry Rowley and his wife Darlene, Gary Couch and his wife Deb, and Herb Phipps, all of West Terre Haute, and Robert Couch and his wife Charlotte of Terre Haute; five stepdaughters and their spouses, Brenda and Duke Wycoff, Trella Faye and Frank Sharp, Virginia and Jack Ivey, Connie and Elvis Padgett, and Debbie and Phil Lowe, all of West Terre Haute; one stepdaughter-in-law, Ruby Phipps of West Terre Haute; three nephews, Steve Torpy and his wife Lindsey, Robert Torpy and his wife Edwinna and Dan Torpy and his wife Lenora, all of Terre Haute; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-greatgrandchildren, stepgrandchildren, stepgreat-grandchildren and stepgreat-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his father; his mother, Mary Dale; one daughter, Darlene Gore; a stepson, Bill Phipps; and a brother, Robert S. Torpy. He also had been a truck driver for several trucking companies, had worked as a diesel mechanic in Chicago for several years, and had been owner and operator of B&J Transportation Escort Service.
Services are 1 p.m. Friday in Fitzpatrick-Pearce Funeral Home, with the Rev. Chris Wilbur officiating. Burial is in New Providence Cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. until services Friday.
