The Shelbyville News Oscar E. “Bud” VanMeter, 79, died Thursday, May 8, 1997, Heritage House Convalescent Center, Shelbyville.

Born July 22, 1917, Jeffersonville, s/o Walter and Elizabeth (Woctoll) VanMeter.
Married Gladys L. (Richey) VanMeter on April 23, 1949; she survives.
Shelbyville resident for 42 years.
Welder at General Electric and Wellman Thermal System.
Lifetime member of the United Auto Workers.
Served in the U.S. Army during World War II and in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.
Member of the Eagles Lodge, the American Legio, and Disabled American Veterans in Shelbyville and of the Bible Baptist Church, Florida.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Charles (Connie) Speece, Shelbyville; a son, Larry O. VanMeter, Langstown, Alabama; a brother, David VanMeter, Scottsburg; a sister, Leona Gresham, Salem; and five grandchildren.
Preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.

Burial: Forest Hill Cemetery, with local veteran organizations conducting graveside military rites.
