A REMARKABLE BURIAL
------------
Mr. Jacob Yarling, brother of Philip Yarling, of Jackson township, this county, residing in Madison township, Tipton county, died on the 21st ult., aged 60 years. At the age of ten he came with his parents from Germany and located in Maryland. Three years afterwards they removed to this county. In 1858, having then a family, he settled at his late residence in Tipton county. He was a hard working man and careful of his affairs. He prospered and made money. It is said that at one time he offered a man five dollars if he would find a stalk of ragweed on his farm, a weed that is so abundant everywhere. Sometime before his death he selected the place where he wanted to be buried, and also procured a large stone slab from the quarry near Anderson to cover his coffin. On the day of his funeral a large number of people assembled. A Lutheran minister from Arcadia preached from Philippians 1:23, 24. Mr. Yarling was put into a metal coffin, which weighed three hundred pounds and cost one hundred dollars. The grave was dug deep and wide on a little bluff near Duck Creek, on his own farm, and a drain was made from the bottom of the grave to the brow of the hill. With much labor the corpse was let down into the grave. Then the large stone, perhaps four inches thick, in two pieces, each as wide as the grave, and the two making the entire length of the grave, was laid on the top of the coffin.

OBITUARY
----------
Peter Yearling
------------
An interesting commemorative service of the late
Peter Yearling of this
county was held in the Second Presbyterian Church (German) on the 20th of
August last. A large audience of relatives and friends of the deceased were
present. The Rev. John H. Eschmeyer preached on Matthew 1, 28: “Come unto me,
all ye that labor, and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.” Then an
extended view of the wants of the life and traits of personal character was
presented by the Rev. Geo. Sluter.
Mr. Yearling was born in Reichenbach, in the province of Tullingen, Germany,
July 3rd, 1810, and settled in Shelby county in 1835, and lived here until his
death in May 1876. By untiring industry, strict honesty and rigid economy he had
acquired a large estate. He was a man of great earnestness of character and
trained his children in the principles of morality and virtue. He was a
communicant of the Presbyterian Church, and was held in universal esteem as a
good and upright man.
