Shelby County
            To the Judge of said County
Your petitioner  Henry H. Jackson  respectfully represents to the Court, that he is much attached to and desires to adopt as his own child  Addie Josephine Esler,  aged Two years and Nine days, the child of  John and Fannie Esler  born in lawful wedlock, but whom your petitioner has had the care and custody of since its birth; that said child has no property within the knowledge of petitioner; that the parents of said child are both living, but that the residence of the father of the child is unknown to your petitioner; that the Mother of the child resides at the City of Indianapolis in the State aforesaid, who your petitioner is informed will appear in open court and consent to the adoption prayed for.
            Wherefore your petitioner prays for an order for the adoption of said child by him in and by the name of  Addie Josephine Jackson.
            And your petitioner further represents to the Court that on the 23d day of February 1871, he intermarried with  Sarah Toll, widow of  James Toll  deceased; that by said former marriage said Sarah had born unto her a son  Edward Rader Toll, Now aged eleven years 10 months and 15 days; that said child has no property within the knowledge of your petitioner and has resided with petitioner and said Sarah ever since their said Marriage, and that the said Sarah resides in the City of Shelbyville in the County and State aforesaid, the present wife of your petitioner, who will appear in open Court and consent to the adoption of said child by him.
            Wherefore your petitioner prays for an order for the adoption of said child by him as his own, by the name of  Edward Rader Jackson.                 Henry H. Jackson

Note from Virginia Flesher:  I don't know if this the same  Edward Rader Toll, but in Jackson County, Indiana, in 1870, 3-year-old Edward R TOLL is living with George R. and  Nancy Rader, both born in KY.  Edward would be about the right age to be the same one in the adoption.
