John H. Leefers

Was born in the year 1831, near the city of Bremen, Germany.  When but a mere boy quite an excitement was created in the neighborhood of his home by the return from the United States of one of the former residents of that place, who told of the wonderful opportunities offered in the "new country."  Mr. Leefers, (then but sixteen years old) took the "emigration fever," and finally, after much persuasion and with great reluctance, his parents consented to him leaving home, and after a seven weeks' voyage he landed in Baltimore.  He went from there to Cincinnati and after several days' search for employment apprenticed himself to learn the cabinet making trade.  In those days mechanics ....
drug business for himself, in the same building he now occupies.  Mr. Leefers is the oldest drug merchant in the city, and by his close attention to business and his honest and square dealing has established a trade that he may well be proud of.  By close economy he has succeeded in accumulating considerable wealth, and has by his genial qualities and strict integrity, placed himself in the front ranks, not only as a business man but also as a citizen.  He keeps the best and purest of drugs and medicines, etc.  His stock is complete in every respect, and persons calling at his place of business are sure to receive courteous treatment.     Next biography in the "Smiling Shelbyville" newspaper article, John H.
