Section 2.
A. Introduction; index; sketches, pages 1 - 14

          This section includes:

An index of names, mentioned in J.P. Stephen's "Historic Sketches of Isaac Phares Family", to make it easier to know what individuals were mentioned, and where their data can be found. Some individuals are mentioned in other places, but the page number(s) shown, are where
their family information was included.
This index was compiled by R.H. Weightman, as he attempted to read and extract from the original pages of the "Historic Sketches".

J.P. Stephen's "Historic Sketches of Isaac Phares Family", which was published by J. P. Stephens, about 1909. The page numbers shown are the page numbers of the original publication, some of which were less than full pages. Any illegible words are shown as a series of dots ....... In some cases where corrections of the spelling of names or dates were made by R.H. Weightman, the corrections are shown in parentheses to indicate they have been added.

Sketch of William Phares son of Isaac Phares of Shelby Co. Ind.

WILLIAM PHARES was born April 4 1830 in Union Tp Shelby Co. Indiana  Where I have always lived. Father died when I was 13 years old. Oct 20 1843. From that day to this I have felt the need of a Father.  Through the blessings of an all wise Providence I have been blessed with friends who were interested in my behalf, brothers and sisters, whom I often consulted, about business and work. I must say I knew no difference between half and whole brothers and sisters.
They are now all gone except George and my self. We are the only living representatives of Father and Mothers' family, the oldest and youngest of the second set of children.
I look back with pleasant feeling; that has always existed among us all. I always looked upon brother John as Father.
After father left us we had a serious affair for quite a while.  Now when I know any left as I was I feel deeply for them. No one knows except those who experience it. It was our lot not to inherit any land. I have had to have care and responsibility all my life.  By the solicitation of brother Matthew Phares I sought an education, but it was cut short. I graduated at our old log school house, under one of the best of teachers, Viz John Sharp. He gave me a certificate to that effect unsolicited. I went to Vernon Seminary, high & school in Jennings co. Ind about two terms. To two of the best of teachers, W. Phares & Frank Martin from Decatur Co. Ind, in 1853 and 54 I went to Franklin Ind, and closed my educational pursuit in Franklin College
