AN APPRECIATION OF JOHN PHARES
In my memory of the Little Blue River Baptist Church, John Phares holds a place different from all other in that he was a resident or lay member and Pastor as well.
In my youth he impressed me by his earnest presentation of truth.  Afterward by his comprehensive grasp of Bible facts.
His ability to read the scriptures and his deep insight into its spiritual realities, made me think him an inspired man.
In 1909 I was bereaved of a son a boy 17 1/4 years.  While in deep grief I found the ............................................ of my all and received the blessing of Holy Ghost.
At this or on Thanksgiving day we were all at Blue River Church of which Bro. Phares was then the Pastor.
He became greatly interested in me and asked his church to invite me to assist him in a series of meetings he was soon to begin.
This they did and we began in a short time.  I want to say I had no thought of taking only part as a humble layman but Bro Phares ........ me forward to preach on Sunday night and the church was crowded with people.  He encouraged with kind loving words to persevere and held me to the Lord in prayer so that I pressed forward as best I could still undecided uncertain.  But the day at the alter of prayer in time, when he and the brethren and sisters were about me the Holy Ghost set me apart to the ministry and gave me an insight into the truth of the Scriptures altogether new.  Hence forth Brother Phares was a new preacher and He say God was giving me light through his exposition of scripture truth.  Oh how I delighted in it.  When I see him in heaven I will tell him again and again.  Brother Phares thrust me forward all through the meeting. He so sweetly counseled and so kindly instructed me I was greatly encouraged to work.  I think this was bro. Phares last ....... charge but he left it greatly strengthened.  Nearly 20 souls were added to the church at this meeting and many were reclaimed.
Brother Phares taught many things.  Among were the following give young converts something to do. .............. from mistakes that ...... work harm. ..........................

Page 39

on to any plan that is laid out for their growth. But give the Holy Ghost a chance to make the original. He relied upon God to make good his word when Zion travails.  she shall bring her children ......... for the evidence of real travail in his church and was sure that God would give the increase.
Another text pray ye, therefore the Lord of the harvest that He would send laboreres into the harvest .... ... .. ... .. he had always seen verified. He told me in his ministry whenever that prayer was made there were always converts, who became efficient Laborers in the harvest.  He believed of course that the only efficient labourers are converted people, and hence God only can ..... them and while he often spoke of the benfits of an education, he did not believe that alone and make a preacher.  Although an orthodox baptist in belief and he greatly desired I should become a minister in that church.  He didn't feel in the least embittered toward me because I did not.  But was the same Father to me and gave all the counsel and encouragement he could after I became a minister in another church and called me to his bedside in his last sickness and there while we were in humble prayer to God, like Jocob of old bestowed upon Me his blessing.  And at that time asked me to minister at his funeral.
I remember on one occasion talking from the text.  The faith once delivered to the Saint.  I thought it was Pauls epistle and so spoke of it.  At the close of my talk Bro Phares made some remarks and in a way that attracted least attention but to me was light, spoke of the epistle of J?de, from which my text was taken.  If like some men he had wanted to reveal my ignorance and his wisdom He would have done it differently.  My work has been evangelistic although most of the time I have been a pastor.  The Lord has added many to his church where I have labored and my heart has been full of joy in my ministry and my hope of Immortal glory is bright and in heaven I will never get done telling Jesus and the Father and the Holy Ghost how I was pushed forward into the work by my half brother Phares.  And I will introduce him to many converts in my ministry as being from the human stand point the man who opened up the way for me.  May all his ..... others as he did m.
