BRILLIANT EVANGELIST
AT BLUE RIDGE CHURCH
----------
With the Rev. M.
T. Martin as the evangelist, the Rev. O. J. McMullen,
pastor of the Christian Union Church at Blue Ridge, and his congregation,
started a special series of meetings at the church last night. The crowd
was so great that the church was soon filled and many turned away, being unable
to get in the church. The prospect is bright for one of the best meetings
ever held in the county. There was also a big attendance at the morning
service, indicating that the membership is ready and anxious for the campaign to
win souls.
The Rev. Mr. Martin is a
resident of Excelsior Springs, Mo., and from the age of eleven years until ten
years ago, he made his way in the world as a boot black, paying the expenses of
his college education by that kind of work almost exclusively. He is a
brilliant speaker and is able to reach all classes by his messages, for he has
seen all sides of life. He is the regular evangelist for the Christian
Union churches of the land, but is undenominational in his preaching, and he
hopes to have the entire community as his auditors during the the progress of
the meetings. They will continue for two weeks and longer if the
interest justifies.
Mr. Martin used as his
subject, Sunday night, "How to Be Useful," considering it from three
sub-topics -- Watch, Fight and Pray. On the subject of watching he
commanded that we watch ourselves and not our neighbors. He commended the
fighting of sin and not folks, and insisted that prayer to be effective must be
definite.
