WEDNESDAY.
-------o-------
First subject was orthography; well disposed of by Miss Huron. She made the lesson a practical and interesting one by the use of diacritical marks as used in spelling.
Prof. Brown gave an interesting talk on reading, as to methods of teaching primary, intermediate and and advanced reading, also a drill on vowels.
Jonathan Rigdon gave a lesson on arithmetic, which was appreciated.
Use and disuse of text books was a theme of lively discussion.
The last morning exercise was a recitation by Prof. Brown, entitled the "Enchanted Shirt,"--well deliveredAFTERNOON.Tom Smith appointed manager of educational bureau. Language lessons by J. Rigdon; writing and correcting sentences and reasons for corrections. The subject, predicate and copula was discussed.
Prof. Brown presented map drawing in an interesting manner. Also formed class in map drawing.
Writing was the ext subject disposed of by Jonathan Rigdon who gave an instructive lesson in position, movements and pen holding.
Miss Huron presented an interesting lesson in arithmetic for primary classes, and a drill on addition and subtraction. Her methods were noted for accuracy and rapidity.
Prof. Brown read a selection, "prayer and potatoes," which was well delivered. The selection was so delivered as to receive the universal approval of all the teachers in the room.
School management was the next subject presented before the institute by Miss Huron, which was ably disposed on under the following topics; Idleness, dull pupils, keeping children at home, want of parental and official cooperation, and other topics. The teachers participated in the exercises.
The reading of queries followed, which proved to be both interesting and instructive.
At roll call in the evening, the book showed an enrollment of one hundred and forty two teachers and visitors. The number is two more than has ever been enrolled at any previous institute. The exercises are very interesting and instructive , and without doubt the institute will prove to be one of the best practical institutes ever held in the county.----------Institute called to order at 9 a.m. Chair appointed W.
