Barnard

The Barnard families of Rush and Shelby County, Indiana, descend from the Quaker whaling families of Nantucket Island in Massachusetts. Other families migrating from Nantucket to North Carolina and then to the Northwest Territory included  Gardner,  Macy,  Swain,  Worth,  Coffin,  Starbuck,  Folger  and  Hussey.  Our line links to the Mayflower Society through an indentured servant,  John Howland.

Barzillai Gardner Barnard  and  Rachel Roberts  moved to Rush County about 1830.  Of their eleven children, nine stayed in the Rush-Shelby area.  One son,  Leander,  moved his family to Bond County, Illinois; another son moved to Washington state.

David Elmore Barnard  (son of Barzillai and Rachel) and his wife,  Louisa Jennie Swain raised their family near Manilla, Rush County, just east of the Shelby County line.
Their children were  Allie Swain Barnard (died young)

Omar Barnard  who married  Lulu Macy,

Marshall Swain Barnard  who married  Lillian Pearl Taylor  and

Roy French Barnard  who married  Minnie Schliessmann.
John Paul Barnard was their only son and
Elizabeth French Barnard was their only daughter.
